My New Shop
« on: March 11, 2021, 07:16:49 AM »
Well, kinda new and I figured I would put up the first post on this thread to get things started. For those that dont know my story, I was restoring a Tenth Ann. car and a spark burnt my shop/barn to the ground. I rebuilt, like the 6 Million Dollar Man, bigger and better. Barn has been finished for a couple of years but I am just now getting the interior up to date. Last couple of days we finished insulating the ceiling and put up the panels. We used a product my siding guy calls 'panel liner'.
It only comes in white, and is a bit lighter gauge than the siding but has the same profile. Used for ceilings and inside walls. Too thin to use outside. You can see why I advocate to finish your shop before you put anything into it. It was a bit of a cluster moving stuff around so we could work up top. All finished now but this pic shows us half done.

Kerry,

I remember reading something about a fire in your previous shop, must have been a nightmare. The ceiling insulation should make it more comfortable year round. Your shop looks great and has three things that are important to me, lots of square footage, lots of light and good insulation. As I get older good lighting has become really important!

Thanks, its primary purpose is woodworking for my day job! Its 24' x 40' with a 24' x 24' garage attached for parking my trucks and tools. My wife calls me KOFA, the King OF half A....., I blame it on my A.D.D. I have yet to get real electric hooked up in there, my electrician is working on that right now. Once all that is done I can finish moving the rest of my woodworking tools in, table saw, shapers, planer, etc. My current wood shop is 16' x 30' so it will be nice to have a bit of space.

That is awesome! I wanted to use that same panel to finish my shop but I ended up just drywalling the ceiling (because I'm cheap) and I had a pallet of 1/2 plywood I bought clearance for $2 a sheet a few years back that became the walls. Now yours looks much better! It's a great shop!

Luke, drywall work is one thing we specialize in. In the long run this didnt cost that much more, its a heck of a lot easier to install, and once its up its done!  Walls are drywall.

Ya, I didn't say I finished the drywall.   :D Just hung it and painted it.... It's just the ceiling... (I do have professional drywall tools and I'm pretty good/quick at it, but that is more work than I wanted to do). Yours looks much better.

Looking at the exterior pics, it looks as if there is a second floor, are the dormers for ventilation?

There is a second floor over the garage area. It is a trussed roof, the option for living space above was like a $200 difference so it was kinda a no brainer. As of now the only access is a ladder and its unfinished. If I ever feel the inclination I could put a stairway in and use it as office space, storage, etc. The dormers are open for ventilation, screened off to keep the bigger critters out.

Thanks, funny you say that, I came in the house the other day for a cold drink and my wife said 'you need a refrig in the barn',  permission granted!

Luke, they are indeed swinging carriage doors. I was gonna put in a regular garage door, but about the time I was ready to order the price skyrocketed ( I can only imagine how much they are now) and they were well over $1k ea. So, it sat for a month with no doors. One sat afternoon I got tired of looking at it that way so I pulled some plywood out of the shop, I had some 1x6's laying around and also had a pile of vinyl beadboard. Half a day later I had doors, and the total cost was for hinges and hardware from lowes, prob. around $100. I read that swing doors are bad in a snow environment, but I have a 6' overhang and had no problem with what snow we did have this past winter. They were only meant to be temporary by they are working ok and until they fall apart I dont plan on changing them.  Oh I forgot, the tempered glass cost about $100.

Kerry I think  I need you to come rebuild my garage as I love the styling of everything you did. That looks so cool...I need to replace the roof, windows, convert the two door to a single bigger garage door, make a 10 foot addition off the back, oh and break up the concrete floor, fill in the basement/crawl space area (always under water) and repour the concrete floor!!!

the walls are good as it's all poured concrete

Are you interested?

Tomorrow is a milestone. How many years later? I dont know I have lost track, but I still do not have electric in my new barn/shop. Power company is scheduled to upgrade my service 9 am tomorrow. After which time we (my electrician with my son and myself doing the lions share of the work) can trench in the new power supply to the barn, and I will finally have REAL electric in there. I have had an extension cord temp. doing the job, so needless to say anything requiring more than 110 on a 100' line is out of the question. I am pretty much only running lights. All of the power has been through battery operated tools.

The main reason behind the behemoth garage to begin with was to relocate my woodworking shop which is about 30%-40% of my day job. We do our share of custom cabinetry, architectural millwork, custom doors, windows, etc. My current wood shop is 16' x 32' so it will finally be nice to 'set up shop' in our new space. Look out Norm, here we come!  Once I get my woodworking stuff in the new space I am going to remodel the small shop with new ceiling, paint on the walls and maybe something on the floor. I am planning on making that my car shop to store all of my parts, restore small stuff etc. Right now I kinda have stuff mixed around, it will be so nice to have wood stuff in one place, car stuff in another.

Yes Jack, thats why I mentioned Norm
New meter base and disconnect went in without a problem. The electrician and myself had everything lined up and figured so once the power company pulled the meter we went to town. Power was back on in 1-1/2 hrs. I know I am a big hit with the neighbors now!! I forgot to mention, I live on a cul-de-sac with about 15 houses. There is one main transformer that feeds a secondary. The power co. said the main needed to be upgraded in order for me to add more electric to my property , so they shut the line down at the street and our entire neighborhood was shut down for the change.

In our area our main feeder's are on poles along the roads but when they turn into developments everything is underground. Commercial and residential. Once you get off the main roads there are virtually no poles anywhere.

Electricians trencher. Worked like a charm. We started at 930am, worked through lunch buy 330 we were done. Not bad for a couple of old guys. My electrician is pushing 70 and Im close to 60.

A couple of items to button up for final inspection. Its SO nice to  have real electric now.

The exterior disconnect is a new code requirement, now you also need surge protection but that's easy and can be part of the panel.
