I read in Jon's Silverado thread about an unfortunate accident he had whilst working on his truck. I have never met him but have pm quite a few times. He even sent me some parts no charge which I thought was more than decent. Heres to hoping he has a speedy recovery.

Yes, I unfortunately had the accident last Monday and then surgery on Thursday.  For anyone who may have missed that post, I was working on my truck and I crushed my finger tip with a fully weighted spindle.  I had hopes that they were going to rebuild my finger tip when I left the ER but they determined in surgery that they couldn’t save the nail matrix or bone that broke.  Ended up being an amputation unfortunately of my left-hand middle finger tip. 

This sucks, but I have to accept the situation at this point.  I was hoping to make progress with my project threads and at least have my truck going by October.  That will be a bit of time at this point between physical and financial recovery.

On a positive note, this incident happened while I took vacation time from work.  I haven’t taken time off in a long time so I have good amount of days banked up for use.  My job has been getting more and more stressful due to higher work loads over the past 2 years and this, long overdue, time off has given me a major mental break.  I’ve been doing a good amount of reflecting the past week rather than constantly working, resting and repeating.

All the best, hope you recover quickly. My brother in law last the tip of one finger in a mower accident, he was a mechanic and it didn’t slow him down at all.

Beat wishes Jon! I hope your body is like mine, even at 43 I heal remarkably quick. I almost posted an incident I had a couple months ago where I almost lost the end of one of my fingers. But the huge piece of meat I picked up and put back to cover bone actually grew back together in 3 weeks! Now I have no feeling there but my body put itself back together.  The human body is amazing, just do everything you can to keep it clean and follow any medical advice you were given. Take this time to rest and relax. And remember, it's only a digit, you have 9 more.    Get well some buddy!

As a role of solidarity, I smashed my finger tip yesterday setting a counter top    Nothing lost but boy did that thing hurt, and throbbed for a couple of hours. I can only imagine what Jon felt! 

Right after I got out of HS I got my left hand caught in a skilsaw blade. Broke the index and middle finger and I lost half the tip on my index finger. Worst part my life at the time revolved around playing guitar with the band I was in. Had to take a break for about 6 months and never really got back into it.

Kerry will appreciate this, once I drove a nail through my thumb, and few years later cut all my tendons doing construction work... it took 2 surgeries and 6 month of therapy to gain some motion.

Thanks again for the kind words and concern on this subject.  Just want to give an update on myself as I have not been on the forum that much for the past year. 

As this relates to the topic of this thread, I amputated a small portion of my left middle finger at the end of September 2021 while working on my truck.  When the accident happened, I ended up being on a 1 month FMLA leave from my job for recovery after a repair surgery.  During that time, I ran into an old friend of mine who I hadn't seen in a good 10 years.  I ended up getting relations with his friend and left my job of 5 years to start working as a Project Manager and doing classic restoration on the side.  Long story short, my relationship with the new employer was not good and I ended up leaving the business last month. 

In regards to my projects, the Trans Am has been sitting for the most part this past year.  Since leaving my last job, I have been concentrating on getting my garage back in working order again.  I plan on getting back to work on the car very shortly.  The K2500 CCSB is now running and driving but there is still plenty to go on it.  I paid a friend of mine to get it going but I am not happy with a lot of the work that was done after reviewing everything. 

My hand has been better.  Still a weird feeling while using that one finger but I think it is what it is now.  I plan to be more involved with the forum again.

A couple months ago while cleaning my workshop, somehow I pushed the centerlink of the table, it dropped and broke a bone in my foot close to pinky toe. And I was wearing Magnum army boots.

Glad you are okay, dude!  Hope your recovery is quick. For what is supposed to be relatively routine, benign work that many of us even consider stress-relieving, it's always worth respecting what can and will go wrong when working on cars.

I can't tell you how many times I've jacked up my '79 in the center of the subframe to get under real quick to do something simple like drain the oil or change out the speedo driven gear or something, and I stop for a second, think, and then crawl out from underneath and put a couple jack stands under in addition to the floorjack. The thought of that jack giving way and getting crushed under the weight of the car is just... horrifying. Absolutely horrifying and a terrible way to go.
