10 bolt question
« on: July 17, 2021, 06:27:17 PM »
This question is aimed at the individuals who have experienced knowledge of the internal dimensions of the 2nd gen 10 bolt limited slip differential.
Curious if anyone can "accurately"  tell me if the idler gears, and idler pinion and bolt, will interchange from an open carrier, to a posi carrier? I have a late 70s limited slip (clutch plates) that is missing the idler gears, and idler pinion, and bolt. The axle gears, and clutches are there, and was wondering if an open set would mix?
Some might think you shouldn't mix gears, cause they wear together, but on the spider gears, the only time they spin with each other, is in the turns. It's not like they constantly are wearing, such as the ring and pinion.
Has anyone ever experienced this swap? Thanks for your reply.

So today I opened up an old 2nd gen 3.08 non-posi, and removed the idler shaft and idler pinions, and replaced them into the posi carrier. They are the same, and fit perfectly. I can now freshen up this unit, and make it functional. I can only imagine the reason the idler pinions and shaft were missing, is from when the PO removed his axles, (for some reason), and didn't put them back. This posi was in the trunk of a parts car, that I stripped, mostly for the clutch pedals, and linkage, but got lots of other stuff from it too. Now that I think of it, the hard parts from the carrier might be in a bucket that came with it. Can't remember that long ago.

Thanks men. And "Halleluiah" I finally figured out the new Photo-bucket format, and pasted a photo. Will call it a "BEFORE" pic.

You must be one of the few remaining photo bucket users! When they limited the use to paying users, instead of people paying as they planned, they up and left instead!
