Shaker Hood Scoop Base 301 to 400
« on: June 21, 2021, 11:55:51 AM »
As some of you might know i am swapping my 80 from a 301 to a 400.
I received some nice links and info already that shows all the differences in the shaker brackets, air intake etc.
But i was curious about this scoop base bellow.
Would this fit my 1980 shaker and then fit on an intake for a 400?
I am not sure if this is the right model since there are a few available on Classic Industries.
Let me know
Thanks

I'm working on a similar swap and have learned that you need the OER F10193 shaker base AND the air cleaner base from a Trans Am that had a Pontiac 400 in it.

Your 301 shaker/scoop will work with these other two parts.

That does look like the metal base needed for a 400. The 400 base is for lack of better explanation symetrical and has the 2 points inside the ring at the flat base end. I think the 301 is offset (maybe). I havent checked but there was a great sticky regarding shakers and their bases (pre crash). Not sure if its been put back up. I know it had to be a lot of work to do but would be nice if it were replicated. Lots of great info. Who wouldve guessed that there were so many different designs, fitments of a simple shaker scoop?

I think the air cleaner base may be specific to the 400 also. They made at least 2 versions I know of. One has a long snorkle which is fairly easy to find, the other which is for a 1979 400 has a short snorkle. That one is made of unobtanium, and can get expensive to find a decent one. Ask me how I know

On my 1980 TA, I recently pulled out the stock 301 and installed a stroked 400.

I purchased the same F10193 from Classic Industries. I carefully drilled out the rivets from the original shaker removing it from the baseplate. The base and shaker were also calked together. It wasn't hard to separate and clean the calk using an orbital sander. I used rounded head screws and nylon lock nuts to secure the new baseplate to the scoop. My screw heads still need to be painted, but you can hardly notice with the hood closed.

As Roadking mentioned the 301 air cleaner is different. It's smaller in diameter and I think the height might be different too. As Roadking also said there are two different style air cleaners for the 400. Either should fit, but the one with the larger oval opening is more desirable and much harder to come by.

Just an idea. I have a box full of really flat head machine screws about a 1/2-3/4 long. They were spares from a locker install I did at a school. The screw head is perfectly flat and with no slot whatsoever. Finished they look like a rivet. I needed a couple when I was redoing the console for my 79, and of course I could not find the box. I took something like a 10/24 slot head machine screw and ground the roundness off the head. It came out pretty flat and was almost identical to locker screws I had. Installed they look just like the rivets.

Kerry,

That sounds like an excellent idea, I may give it try. Any chance you have pictures from you console so I could see how far down you went?
