70-77 Radio (and 8 track) Bluetooth upgrade
« on: May 25, 2021, 10:10:12 PM »
I posted this as a question originally before the crash which led to how I ended up setting up my radio so I thought I’d at least throw out there the nutshell version and if there is interest I can answer questions and provide more info.

My goal was to utilize a factory radio for my 77 and add a console 8 track but also be able to use Bluetooth to link my phone. 70-77 radios and the separate 8 tracks, for those that don’t know, utilized one wire to each speaker (technically even though the rear speaker did have two) and used common ground instead of 78+ (and modern radios) for their speaker connections. They also required 8-10 ohm speakers which can be purchased but aren’t the “standard” anymore.

What I did was purchased a Bluetooth enabled amp made by kenwood (I believe others exist too) which was small enough to mount under my center console. Then I used a line output converter to convert the factory one wire output to two rca line level outputs that I could feed into my amp. I used two rca splitters so my amp “saw” 4 inputs, left front, right front, left rear, and right rear. The amp then fed “4” modern speakers. I say 4 in quotes cause I used one of the dual coil from speakers so technically that speaker plus two 6x9s out back. Anyway, the amp was now the deciding factor on what type of speakers were required so there was no need for 8-10 ohm speakers. The amp has a wired remote which I hid in my ashtray and switches between an rca input (radio or 8 track player) or push a button and the amp switches to Bluetooth and will stream from my phone.

I know this is real bare-bones on what the setup is but #1 like I said if there are further questions and interest I’ll be happy to answer and #2 I struggled to find any info saying something as simple as a line output converter would work so I figured if I post this someone might find it and know it’s possible to do.

Is it the perfect setup for a high output state of the art audio system? No. But for the average Joe, I think it works just fine.

I got it from a local shop actually, which is closed now, but I found them listed online.

I can’t be positive but I think this is the same one that I have. I’d have to take a look. I’m due at some point to pull my console and 8 track player to adjust the speed on it (it plays a tad fast) so when I do i can try to snap a picture of the one I used for comparison

$156 for shipping??? I think they have a problem.

Nice post by the way. I have my 7 track, line converter and amp ready, I just have to install it all (my is the easier 1979 radio).

Ha! That has to be a mistake. I hadn’t noticed that. Yea yours should be pretty simple. Does that 79 radio still only have two speaker outputs (one front and one rear?)

What I did when I had my 76 T/A was had an AM radio converted to AM/FM by a guy who still sells on eBay, and the radio also had an aux input. What I did was tied my signal for the 8 track into that. It worked really well.

My radio and 8 track are essentially hooked up as they would’ve been from the factory. I kind of made my own harness between the two, partially because my radio needed modified for an unrelated reason but otherwise it’s functionally the same. A person could take their factory setup, add the line out converter and hook it up to the amp and new speakers and be good to go

Thanks for the info.  I am sure I asked you this before the crash too.  I just always wonder where I'd find one that was verified to work if I needed a set.  I bought a pair almost 40 years ago and I still have all that stuff.  I had them hooked to a Blaupunkt Memphis which is a shaft stereo in a 1979 Diesel Tornado.  Kept the whole setup when I crushed it.  The Toro had originally been am/fm/40 channel CB with the power antenna that had that little field coil like a hornets nest on it.  Car features were just more entertaining back then.  I was looking at a 76 Olds 98 on FBM just this week and it had Local/Distance settings on the power antenna.  If you switched it to "local" it would drop to half mast.  Probably didn't do anything really.

The 78 and 79 radios had room in the wiring layout for 4 speakers, but  I don't know they all actually do have the power being supplied.  The 1979 layout with rear dual speakers was 3 outputs from the factory using a 4 output format, so you had like right rear, left rear, left front, and nothing.  So radios used with that must have had a fader.  Then in 80 of course 4 speakers became an option.

Interesting info. I wondered about dual rear speaker cars and how they’d handle what channel the front would supply. Weird lol. As far as the two speaker cars and the radio having 4 outputs, maybe they are powered. If I remember right the same radios were used in other cars. It would seem weird that they would disable two channels for radios going into firebirds with only two speakers but maybe they did.
