Help with window! I have replaced regulator and when window is rolled up, door open, I can wiggle window inwards and outwards about 1”. What could be causing excess play

On the top of the door inner there are 3 window guides covered in felt. They are adjustable.

Make sure they still have felt or you will have scratched glass instead. The front guide generally isn't adjusted, but can be. On some models it only supports the door trim and has no guide.

Silly question, but is the inner door panel installed. That adds a lot of support to the window in the up position.

I agree but the felt guide is doing most of the work. Some play is normal to allow a tight seal when closing the door against the door seal.
