Title: High mileage LS1 timing

I have reason to believe that my LS1 motor has around 200k on it. However it runs absolutely phenomenal, no issues what so ever.

I did not inspect or mess with the motor before the swap, I just put it in there and it ran perfectly, no codes, 40+ psi on idle.

Recently I have begun obsessing about needing to change gears and chains on it to prevent a catastrophic event.

How are you guys thinking about this, are there any common signs of failure I should pay attention to?

Post by: ryeguy2006a on June 07, 2021, 10:24:28 AM: Nothing wrong with preventative maintenance, but beware the dreaded scope creep!! BUT.... if you are replacing the timing chain, it wouldn't be much more work at all to swap out the cam. If you went with a mild cam in the 22x duration and maybe a 113-115 duration, you could pick up some very easy HP. But then you would be on the stock lifters..., then new head gaskets, and head bolts. 8)

Lol, problem is.. what's a walk in the park for Ryan is not quite the same for us mere mortals. I'm honestly not confident any preventative maintenance of this caliber done by myself would solve or create issues.

Don't know how to proceed honestly, by 200k its due date for sure, but then again maybe the previous owners might have done it already. And motor runs great.. should I try to fix something that's not broken while risking messing something up?

It's a tough one.

Post by: ryeguy2006a on June 08, 2021, 05:49:07 AM: Well maybe the magic of the internet makes me look more experienced than I am. The first cam swap change I ever did was on the LS1 I built. The second was the new 6.2 motor that I built this past winter.

I'd say that if you are happy with the LS1 and it's not giving you problems, as my grandfather would say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
