1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
« on: November 28, 2024, 07:52:56 PM »
Happy Thanksgiving!!

I've been wanting to share my new to me car for a while but the only way I can access TAC, without it looking like early 2000's graphics, is by using my work computer. So the car I bought is a 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham. I am the 3rd owner...the original owner sold it about 3 years ago to the guy I got it from. It is an unrestored survivor that has been well maintained but is showing its age. It has the 350 olds with 350TH tranny and 2.41 gears. My short term plans for it are:

1) to have the A6 compressor rebuilt and get the AC going
2) Swap out the 2.41 gears for 3.23 and add posi
3) Swap the TH350 for a 200 4R (need to have that tranny rebuilt first)

Long term plans are to rebuild the Olds 350 and convert to hydraulic roller cam and lifters. I also plan to go EFI with a Holley set up. Eventually, I'll redo the suspension and pain the car. The plush interior is in good shape but it does need to be replaced. I thought there would be more aftermarket support for the Colonnade A body platform but that's a big Nope!

Anyway, here's some car porn for you fellas!

I am still having the same issue with the website also.

You may wish to use a bit more gear if running the 200-R4m say 3.55.  My 71 did not like the 3.23's until 70+ mph.

Congrats.  I wanted a 76-77 Cutlass when I was I younger man.  A man had a red with white interior '76 with t-tops for sale.  The year was 1979.   I talked to him and he named his price (he was a wholesale car dealer).  I asked him if he could wait a couple days until Friday, and he agreed.  Friday came and I went to the bank for the money.  I showed up and didn't see the car.  I asked him about it and he said someone came up with cash and bought it.  I still remember that car.  You have a great car there.  I'm kinda jealous!

I love it! Pop moved up to Olds after Pontiacs so I always favored those over the buicks. I particularly liked the cutlass's. My older brother bought a new one around '81 or so.
I am not surprised that there is little support as far as parts go. You dont see many of those around anymore. Keep us updated on your progress.
And rethink the efi, LOL

Also, I was having problems with the forum until I switched to Firefox. It works fine for me on that platform, on edge its all wonky. Funny thing was, my banking app did the same. It would not work properly until I loaded ffox for TAC, now my bank works perfectly there.

Sounds like you're describing the Cutlass Salon. I wanted one ever since my grandfather had a '76 Cutlass, blue with white interior. This was in the late 70's, possibly 1980. I was hoping the Cutlass I bought had the swiveling driver's seat and a olds 403...negative on that. I suppose I simply assumed a car with the sport steering wheel, rally gauges, cruise control and power windows/locks and A/C would have the other options as well. Having a 6 way adjustable seat would be nice since the seats kinda have a gangster lean going on!
I wish I had purchased a Cutlass 10 years ago, since these cars have become so expensive. Ten years ago a trailer queen Cutlass would have been around $12K-16K, now those cars are around $30K!

Roadking,
I download firefox on my home PC but the issue persisted yet. At first, the problem was only on my PC but keeping up with TAC on my cell phone was still ok. Now its both! Because of that I have been away from TAC for quite some time...I really miss it here.  Just recently, I tried logging on at work, using Firefox and a MacBook Pro. Well, it worked!

As far as progress, I have done a few things to the car:
1) Replaced the windshield, since it would not have passed the safety inspection upon attempting to register it here in Texas.
2) I bought a set BFG 245 60 15's, which I both like and dislike. The speedometer is off now with the shorter tire and because it is shorter, there is a bigger gap up front. I like it because it fills out the wheel wells (width-wise) nicely and the car handles better too. The front fenders and rear quarters flare out, which made the original 215 70 15 tires look silly.
3) I'm about to replace the water pump gasket since it began leaking last week. I'll replace the pump as well if I'm going to remove all of the accessories to replace the gasket. It didn't start leaking until I pressure-washed the engine to get rid of some caked on/baked on oil which would smell on long drives (If I want my wife to come along, it can't stink  ). Right after that, it began leaking! :???:

As for EFI, I have talked to quite a few guys that done so on their old cars and they all say it was worth the expense and trouble. I can also appreciate keeping a car original...to an extent!

Funny you should mention that. My wife and I picked up the Olds in Los Angeles and drove back. When we were leaving West Hollywood, we stopped by an Autozone to pick up oil, coolant, etc. A couple of guys asked me when I was going to pimp out my Cutty...I told them, "the second my butt hits the seat".
