Hi All
I just purchased a Progression Ignition distributor for my 1979 T/A with an Olds 403, I have it installed and the engine fires up quite well. So far it is doing everything it was promised to do however I’m trying to dial it in and it has some limitations as I have found out. I’m trying to work out if I’m tuning it correctly or if it distributor can’t get as much timing as I need.
The engine is relatively stock with the exception:
- Torque / RV Cam
- Edelbrock 3711 performer intake manifold
- Hooker long tube headers
- Ported cylinder heads
Previously I had ignition timing setup at factory setting however I think my vacuum advance was a bit high at idle which was about 40degrees @ 800rpm
The Progressive Ignition runs a maximum idle timing at 24 degrees (total) which I think is a bit low for a low compression Olds 403 engine and all in at 34degrees @ 2000rpm. As you can see my original settings where a bit of a mess.
Question for the group is what are others seeing with ignition timing at idle (total timing with vac advance)? Is the 24degrees @ 800rpm too low for these engines?
The product seems to really good and easy to use, I’m just trying to work out the best settings for my engine.
Thanks
Bill
