Window Tint
« on: June 26, 2024, 05:29:02 AM »
Got the windows done for Tint.  Rear is a limo tint and the sides are a 40% I believe, which is illegal but they are down 90% of the time anyway.  I need to do some polishing on the exterior of the rear window due to some scratches

Looks great!
Enough idiots driving illegal cars and people that just dont know how to drive, window tint should be the last on anyones list to hassle someone over. I have dark on all four side windows on my truck and have never had a problem.

That looks really good. I could be wrong but side usually end up around 20%. That’s kind of the standard for side windows and what’s typically factory on rear windows on modern cars.

I’ve been debating on getting mine done as well but being mine is an essentially stock looking I can’t decide if I will like the look or not. Some old cars look great with it. Some don’t. Yours does and I like that you have the 15x8 wheels to compare to since that’s what I’m running.

I have louvers on my rear window so will only likely get the sides done if at all. I need to replace my drivers side though due to scratches as well.

We bought a 2005 Suburban 2500 a few years ago.  It was in an FBI fleet of suburbans and came with limo tint on all windows.  We got stopped by a State Trooper because of the dark tint.  He used his window tint gadget to let us know it was too dark.  We told him the situation and he gave us a warning to get it fixed.
We have a window tint guy here that is retired LEO and he set it up so that it's still darker than the law allows but passable enough that we don't get pulled over any more.
There are 1000's of vehicles that have very dark tint and never get stopped.  And life goes on.

How does the dark tint compare to the t-tops, similar amount? And yes, any scratches will often be more visible after.
Did they do the rear glass in one piece or split down the middle? I remember chatting to a tint guy maybe 10yrs ago when getting another car done. He asked if it was the type with the large wraparound glass, looked horrified when I confirmed. Suggested it could take several attempts and that I should just settle for a rear louvre!

That is the reason I have never had my TA done. My Formula had the rear tinted (purple) and it was 3 pieces. I always thought that it looked horrible. I just don't have faith that a place could do a good job on my TA. I was going to wait until Brian got his done and then go there but I forgot he has rear louvers...

I have not compared them yet but the limo rear window would be significantly darker.  The T Tops might be close to the door windows.  The rear is one piece, I had it done while it was removed from the car, and it still look him three tries.

That does look great!

Another option (that I went with) is the gray tinted glass from Auto City Classic.  Not super dark but I’m happy with it.

That looks good. How do your side windows work? Go up and down good?

They work well.  I didn’t have power windows so I installed an aftermarket power window kit from a company named Nu-Relic and added a switch to my original console.

Anyone know of any tricks to install tint on the rear glass? I tried everything with no luck, just wrinkles and kinks in the material.

The pros have dramas, often larger glass with compound curves get a join down the centre, as mentioned.

My rear glass originally had tint. It was done in thin strips, maybe 3 or 4 inches wide across the width of the window.

That's different. Was it a rear demister grid screen? That may have been easier to trace to.

In my case yes, rear grid. I got a nice clean glass out of the donor car I used so the original is sitting on top of my shelf. I would take a pic but its quite a PIA to get to it.
