Reverse lockout delete

I couldn't find anything in search(probably not using it correctly)but how do you get rid of the reverse lockout rod assembly and have everything working?

No way that I know of. I have to keep my colum in the neutral position so the ignition will work and the backups lights are off. I know that shift works and others make a shifter located neutral and backup switch kit but that won't lock the steering wheel.

I am still shocked that there is no kit that converts the hard linkage to a cable operated setup. The factory used a cable to the trans for kickdown, throttle position and shifter in other applications, why would it be so difficult to do the same for column operated back up and start safety switch operation?

I’ve thought about making one. I can’t imagine it would be super difficult. Maybe with a spare auto cable I have. Though I have a 4 speed now. I mounted a micro switch on the bottom of my shifter linkage to activate my reverse lights.

It's kind of funny, but I have never seen anything about this mentioned anywhere, and you have to conclude for the longest time nobody cared! 
I guess maybe we are getting a little more refined, I don't know.  once in a while you'd have a thread started by somebody whose column lever fell down a little bit (out of park) and they couldn't get the car started.

A person with a little fab skill could make another version, I'm sure.  Modifying what you have just enough to avoid some obstruction might be easier than going to a cable, too.

I may someday (ya, right) have to make a cable operated thing for mine. I have started it in gear a couple of times.

Lokar makes a cable for their steering columns I bet you could retrofit to ours.

The reverse lockout linkage can be annoying for sure. My car has the 4-Speed BW, and around a year ago, mine needed servicing because the hairpin clip holding the control rod from the reverse selector from the trans to the lower control rod on the reverse lockout linkage came off, and the rods separated. My reverse lights wouldn't turn off as a result. The whole linkage including the idler support needed the hardware, washers/spring washers; grommets; and bushings replaced from heavy wear. Not a big job, but a cable would've still been a more streamlined approach.
