Woodworking
« on: January 09, 2023, 04:02:03 PM »
I think I had a woodworking thread before the, you know what. I will do a quick restart. I had a project to replace an exterior door in a 100 year old church building. The original was long gone, the replacement was an interior hollow core with some box store 1x's nailed to the outside. Needless to say it was not constructed well and was rotting. The original jamb was in bad shape from years of guys messing with it, so it needed replaced as well. That ended up being the hardest part of the job.

Existing door, didnt look too bad but it was really a POS.

Take a lot of measurements, pictures and a few drawings.

Good Job! really looks great.
I love wood working as well, i am not expert but i love to work with my hands on anything not just car.
Actually built another garage myself in the fall to continue the trans am restoration.

exploded view of the joinery. A bit tricky as the face is flush but the inside is style and rail. This is to look like how the original was made. There was a set of double doors that has survived the century to look at, but I had no idea on how the joinery worked. I had to make that part up.2023-01-04_08-46-23 by Kerry Grubb, on Flickr
The non show side of the rails have a sliding dovetail across the width of the door. I hope this will prevent splitting. The outside of the planks need to move and the inside rails need to stay put.

Inside view.

We did not work steady on the door, usually weekends and evenings and rainy days. It took several months to go from rough lumber to a finished product. The installation was a one day job. That included tearing the old door and jamb out, installing the new jamb, door and hardware. We needed to do the installation in one day because the job was almost 3 hrs one way from the shop. I didnt want to have to make too many trips! Everything was done by myself and my son. All the material is African Mahogany for weather resistance.

I am now working on a set of cabinets for the same church. If I get a chance I will photo document that one as well.

We have a niche for doing this kind of stuff. This church got my name from another church we did similar work to a couple of years ago. You are correct that not many people want to do jobs like this, and fewer with the skills (not trying to sound egotistical). I am 4th generation building crap and trying to pass on what I can to my son. Most of the guys that knew this kind of stuff are long gone. If one cant go to HD or Lowes and buy it then it cant be done!
I will say it was not an in expensive job.

Heres a tool box I built for myself a few years ago. It is primarily for my hand tools. It was loosely based on one in the
Colonial Williamsburg collection from the 18th century.

Large box is made from cypress. The inside stuff is white pine with mahogany veneer. I did all of the veneer work old school with hot hide glue. The inside of the lid is going to have a compass point veneered in place. I pulled this out of the back of the shop after a 5 year sleep. Its been awhile since I have built any furniture  I have the urge so I may finish up with this over the winter.

Ryan, the door being made from mahogany is purely for longevity as an exterior door. Its a pretty good wood to use for outside stuff. That and Cypress, but cypress is a bit coarser grained and a bit oily. What I used for this is called African Mahogany I dont think its a 'true' mahogany and some of it is quite ugly, imho! There are some pieces that are a bit darker and denser, if I were building a piece of furniture I would pick those out for that purpose. True mahogany is almost impossible to get now, Cuban mahogany is all but gone. That is what all of the furniture masterpieces of the 18th cent. were made of. That really is a beautiful piece of wood!!

Kerry, not that long ago trades were passed down generation to generation, today almost unheard of. You passing your skills down to your son is fantastic. The fact that he has an interest is great. I have a few family members into furniture making as a hobby. They find it very rewarding and relaxing. Sorry as I tend to ramble on, your hand tools reminded me of a show I used to watch on PBS. I think it was called the Woodwright. It was just amazing to see what this guy could do with hand tools.

That's cool you know him. I loved watching his show! I think I understood he was just trying to get as much information across to the viewers in the short amount of time he had. I act like that too when I have a limited amount of time with a person who is interested in something I have a passion for.

How did you meet him?

Mike, I have seen some impressive wood carving done with chain saws, ice sculptures too.

One year on my annual Colorado camping trip, I happened across this.  It wasn't there the season before, but there it was the following year. Is it a perfect piece of art? No, but still cool as all get-out and a whole lot better than I could do.  I now make it a point to go by it every year while hunting.  And this area is a walking or atv/utv access area only.  Your car or SUV would be destroyed long before you got to this, so obviously a local loaded up their chainsaw and rode back there to make our "totem-pole" magically appear.

An elk, just because...

And:  Locally, in the town of Paducah (named after Chief Paduke) someone was back in the early 80's chiseled and chainsawed a tribute to the Chickasaw chief.  It remains on display in the city park.

Those are really cool Mike.

Luke, I belong to a woodworking guild, there is an annual meeting in Williamsburg. Many years ago Roy Underhill was the guest speaker. He was staying in the same hotel as myself. After the meeting I went to the small lounge to partake on a glass of Kentucky's finest and a treasure from Cuba and Mr. Underhill was in there as well. There were only about 5 or 6 of us in there and we became chummie. Every year after we would get together at the meeting. I know him well enough to walk up and speak and have done so on a personal level many times, however I doubt he would know me from Adam.

Kerry, that's a really nice-looking project there! A friend of mine got me started in woodworking a few years ago; I'm still a junior wood-butcher (as opposed to seasoned wood-elf) but after a long day slaying IT dragons it sure is nice to work with something a bit more compliant! I've been working on various bookshelves and bookcases for our house. Made some swords for the nieces and nephews this Christmas, the shields are still in the production line though.

That sounds like fun. I am a 3rd generation carpenter, and enjoy building furniture on my time off. Something wrong with this picture? One of the reasons I got into cars and restoration, I was too immersed in wood stuff, every time I built a new piece my wife would ask me why? So I decided to build cars instead. I still get the why question though!

LOL, I can empathize with that! I really enjoy learning new skills, especially tradecraft. My dad was an ironworker for many decades and while I didn't follow in his profession, he taught me a great many skills, though carpentry wasn't among them. Taught me how to log timber though, like his father before him. As we would travel the country he'd point out different buildings or powerplant chimneys he'd worked on.

My son and daughter both like to be involved in my projects, whether it's wood projects, automotive, etc. I once asked my son what he wanted to be when he grew up (he was about 4 at the time); he gave me a quizical look and said "I be Fweddie" (Freddie), as if it were obvious.  :D Best answer I ever got to that question! My dad would often say "I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!"

Did some restoration work on a drop leaf table. It belongs to my wifes boss. I think its about a hundred years old, not much in terms of furniture. The table top itself was battered pretty badly, and the leaves had warped beyond. Luckily the mahogany veneer was very thick (compared to todays stuff that is about like a piece of paper). I started off by pulling the veneer off of the substraight using long wood wedges I made. Hammering them in very carefully. Had to do this on both sides. Once I had those off and put to the side for reuse, I cut the leaf in pieces, and reguled it back flat. One I had to build from new as it was too badly warped.

The edge of the table had a triple bead. I had to make a scratch stock to replicate what was there.

This is the lone drawer, one was missing so I had to make a new one of those as well. Start with some poplar for the sides, a quick layout of the dovetails. Saw, chisel and fit together.2023-08-04_06-33-57 by Kerry Grubb, on Flickr

Finished and ready to go back to the owner. It has only been sitting in my shop since 2021! No sense in rushing into things

This is a LARGE cabinet we built for the church of which we did the red door installation. It was a bit of a challenge as its 10 feet long and the doors had to be a clear opening across the width to allow a metal hanging system to fold out. The racks are to hold linens for the alter, cabinet is cedar lined. Pics dont do it justice, its over 4 ft high and over 3 ft in depth. Had to build it as a knock down just so it would fit through the doorway.

Thanks guys. Just showing what keeps me busy in my spare time, LOL. Shop jobs are kinda hit and miss as most of the work we do is at peoples houses. They do come in on occasion and sometimes it seems like all at once. I would prefer doing custom millwork out of the shop full time but dont actively look for that kind of work. I have about 20 pair of shutters that need to be refurbished then all of my current shop load will be caught up. Can dedicate more time to getting the old bird out of there.

That is pretty awesome! Are the doors like bifold or something to clear the ranks? Really cool. Great work!

Yes, the bifold doors were the biggest challenge. The overall opening is almost 10' and unlike a bifold closet door where the top track just holds the top of the doors in place, in this case the top track had to be 'structural' for lack of a better word. The doors hang from the top track. Finding the right hardware was surprisingly difficult. When I bid the job I figured no big deal. But I chased that stupid stuff down for months before finding just the right thing. Trying to keep the top from bowing down with the weight in the middle was another challenge, I think (and hope) we got that one figured out as well, LOL.

Another crazy project. I have a very good customer that owns an 18th century house. We do their maintenance and upkeep. They had a couple of chairs that had broken legs. One on the back one on the front. They wanted them repaired for Easter dinner. They were actually a pretty easy fix, AND they were in my shop for less than a week! That is a new record. The last table I had to restore only took about 3 years

I'm just getting caught up on this thread and wow!!

I would love to spend some time with you just learning a saw-dusts worth of woodworking education to aid in all my projects!!

I am doing a good job making plenty of mistakes and plenty of saw dust!!

Currently trying to finish the kitchen cupboards but that has been put on hold since I threw my back out Wednesday morning!!

Thanks Charlie, you are welcome anytime I could always use the help

Another little project in the shop yesterday. Nice little relaxing job for a Friday considering it was rainy and miserable out. Had a railing to make for a long standing customer. House was built in the late 1700's so everything goes back as close to original or at least what is currently in place. No plastic allowed

Original rail. It had rotted at both ends and came loose. Some of the pickets are rotted as well.

Start with glue up and shaping the top rail.

Mark, then start the mortise cuts, clean up with a chisel. Then this happened to my go to mallet! Time for another handle I 'spose. Get ole trusty out to finish the job.

And a couple of hours later......finished rail. Now off to the paint shop.
