4speed shifter Knob
« on: December 04, 2022, 09:50:00 AM »
The knob spins around free when the car sits in the sun and gets hot, I'm sure others must have had this problem, what did you guys do to fix it? It's got nothing to do with the bolt that holds to the shifter arm just the knob spins around the assembly.

Sounds like the glue that is holding the knob to the metal shifter is loosening with the suns heat. I think I would try to take it off and put some different type of glue back on. Unfortunately my 4 speed has been sitting in the barn for the last upteen years and I have a hurst handle so its not a problem for me.

The heat is expanding the knob on the threaded insert fixed to the gear stick. I guess the next time it does it you could see if it will pull off completely but have a light smear of suitable glue or shaft retainer ready to go straight away, might be enough to get a better fix out of it when it cools and heats up again.

I had this problem with the knob on my 442 that has the Hurst his/her shifter.  I didn't want to make it as permanent as would be with glue so I wrapped the threads with teflon plumbers tape which bound it up enough to keep it from rotating.

Is it loose on the gearstick or the threaded insert?

That's it, I've tried to separate the threaded insert in the past to no avail but it was cold, I'll try heating it with my heat gun see if I can separate it. Thanks

I too like the looks of the original, keeping the car as original as possible. One day IF I ever get my car on the road I will most likely put the shifter knob back to stock.

I also have the factory 4 speed knob. I put a Hurst t handle on because I thought it was cool but went back to factory,  just feels better and yes it also spins round and round but hasn't come off in my hand yet.
