Just West of Augusta, heading east, the speed limit drops from 65 mph to 55 mph then to 30 mph. 30 mph through Augusta then up to 45 mph to the curve then 65 mph going east. I always watched for the radar. They like to stop out-of-towners, especially semi's.
He was sitting right behind the speed limit 30 sign. I saw him before I got there; I just didn't realize that there was speed limit drop there. I saw the sign and immediately braked. Everyone else held their speed. So he hit the lights and I pulled over. I pointed out that all the Kansas-tagged cars never slowed and I was following them, not knowing the area's speed through there. He was polite, and told me I slowed down so he came for me, and that I was lucky that he was writing me a 40-in-a-30 ticket (he said I was doing 42 when he tagged me and that would make the fine higher). Only cost $155
Pretty sure the braking and out-of-state license plate was the reason. I usually take 166W at the border, 77 N to 160W, then 281N to Dodge City, then 50W all the way to Gunnison Colorado. This year I decided to try a different rural view and take 400W/50W from the Mo/Ks line to my destination. Trip there was great, lots of new country scenery, and several small towns, and 4 roundabouts. Same for my trip back, other than the Augusta hospitality. Next year I may or may not go through Augusta, but the rest of the trip through the rural areas was awesome. I used to take I-70 every year all the way to Colorado, then drive small roads to the SW area of Gunnison. But I have grown to absolutely detest I-70 and the lack of scenery, after the first 3-4 trips, and started going through Coffeyville and, from there, on to Colorado. I now leave Kentucky and use Interstate highway only from west of Springfield Mo. to exit 1 in Kansas (just over1 hour total time on the interstate). Interstates are efficient, but boring. I like the small towns history and small farms much better.
