TH350 - rebuild or aftermarket?
« on: November 17, 2022, 08:27:23 PM »
It's been a while since I've been here, but I'm getting my engine in soon, and am looking for advice on my TH-350 transmission.  I am not going to be rebuilding it myself (transmission, like carbuerator, derives from the latin word for "don't mess with it, newbie").

My question is - should I take it to a local place for rebuild, or should I get one that I see advertised from speed shops like Monster Transmission or from a catalog like Jegs?  I presume it will be a bit cheaper to go local, but who does it better?

Thanks in advance!

The engine is in!  Now to hook it up!

Support local and have them install and set it up, and follow up for any tuning, and keep matching speedo gears and correct parts.

Back when I had mine done, I had it done by a local shop. When I had my 200r4 rebuilt, I had it done by a local shop as well. Both shops were reputable and I had several solid sources that recommended them. Everything turned out fine for both transmissions.

Mixed results here: the TH400 rebuild lasted 4 years - the place looked sketchy but I was much younger and more trusting.  The TH200-4R that replaced it was done quite well by a noted shop and still going strong 20+ years later.  The 200-4R is a much more complex unit.

TH350's are pretty simple - you should be able to do this on your own with a good kit.
