1976 - 1979 Trans Am A542C and A212CW air filter usage
« on: September 28, 2022, 03:40:38 PM »
I have a 1980 T/A with a transplanted 1976 Pontiac 400 in it.   Currently I have the AC Delco A212CW air filter in it and not sure if this is the correct one for it.    When I did my research, in 1976 they offered a A542C and a A212CW for the Pontiac 400 in the Firebirds.   From 1977 to 1979 they offered only the A212CW air filter for the Pontiac 400 in the Firebirds.

The A542C ID and OD diameters are similar to the A212C, but the A542C is about 1/2" o 3/4" smaller in height.

Does anyone know in what configuration of a 1976 T/A that the A542C is used and when the A212CW air filters are used?

I'm trying to get the correct air cleaner label for the A542C or A212C but not sure which one to get.   Ames Performance offers both.

The taller elements are for the regular models with the full aircleaner lid, the lower height is for shaker models with dome lid under the shaker.
Correct label for what? A 1976 400 TA?

That makes  sense even though the taller air filter fits with my shaker assembly.   I will put the 1979 A542C decal on the air cleaner and use the shorter filter.
Thanks
