Clock replace or repair
« on: July 28, 2022, 06:59:03 PM »
My clock has stopped working.  The second hand moves, however, the min and hour hands no longer move.  The adjusting knob will not do anything but spin.

I am looking for recommendations for repair or whoI can purchase a replacement from.

Thanks,
John

I’m not positive they make replacements, though they may, but since you will have to pull it all apart to get to it I’d consider opening it up to see what you have going on inside. Sounds like a stripped gear or something. Albeit, I don’t have any experience with those. Just the earlier electromechanical and the quartz conversions for them. And I don’t think the quartz conversion can be substituted in an original quartz clock. Again, could be wrong on that though.

I used a guy from Minnesota, I think his name is Jerrys Clock Works. There may be another that goes by that moniker as well. I sent him the clock from my car, he did a full rebuild, put in a new stem etc. I think the turnaround time was around a week or so. It was around $100, if you added a quartz movement there was an upcharge. That was at least 5 years ago.

I did a quartz replacement of the whole works which obviously fixes your problem.  I don't recall right now where I got it, but being GM it probably fits all kinds of stuff.

I do recall the box looked like this:

I bet I bought it direct from them in their ebay store.  $90.

As an extra, try the Quartz repair kit as mentioned or you have to try your luck with another used clock from 79-81. It's possibly not the same as the Quartz conversion kit of earlier models unless you only keep the face. When I last checked the reproduction tacho-clock by OER was only the 76-78 version, not available separately and wasn't a direct swap into 79-81 clusters without swapping the lot and circuit board etc, by which stage you'd then have a 78 version. It appears to be an August-78 change.

If looking at used gauges to try out, remember that they didn't get the Quartz lettering on the clock until later. They also changed the font for 80-81 or so. But you can tell by the rears of the type. Standard clock of the 70-78 years had the round housing, the tacho incorporated it.

The Quartz clock version had the oval/flat sided housing.
