Did anyone miss me?
« on: May 27, 2022, 04:34:18 PM »
First post in two weeks
Just came back from a two week business trip, travelled about 12k miles to 3 different continents and 5 major cities. Not fun and I really missed home.

Jack,

Welcome home! Enjoy your weekend, nothing beats sleeping in your own bed.

I missed your contributions and wish TAC was a little more active.

I used to be a road warrior, sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night and have to think for a second where the heck am I!

You know, I thought it was really slow here and I recently checked pack into the pro touring forum and it is pretty dead there too.... I don't understand why folks would use the Facebook groups... For e it's so hard to follow.  I wish there were more builds going in here and everywhere for that matter.... Glad to see you came back!

“Easy” access to quick info with little effort from the poster. Except more often than not I see way more inaccurate info from keyboard warriors regurgitating what they’ve seen elsewhere rather than actual factual knowledge from people who have experience to back what they offer. Just my opinion though.

One of the Cities was Galway - what a beautiful place. I've already told the wife that I'll plan ahead to bring her with me the next time I go.

I had to look that one up. I would love to get to Ireland one of these days, after all they named a county after me
I know mom and dad loved it there. They pretty much travelled all over, and I was fortunate enough to travel a lot growing up. I dont have a lot of desire to do so now, maybe because I have already seen so much of this country and have done a little over seas looking as well. We have a job coming up about 2 hrs away and will be staying there during the week. I am NOT looking forward to that at all.

It's a really big bummer, but I have a feeling that if the forums keep steady that people will come back from FB eventually. I will say though that it's pretty cool working out on your car at 1am, and take a picture with a question and post to FB. You'll get 30 answers to your questions in a matter of a few minutes. You just have to filter out all the nonsense along with 4 good answers haha

I noticed you havent been on for a bit, figured you were travelling for work again. Without getting into details can you divulge a tiny bit what you do that requires world travel? Just a curiosity as my job for the last 40 yrs has been confined mostly to within a 15 mile drive from home.

Most guys prob already know that I do construction. I am in MD almost to the DE line. We did a job remodeling the maternity ward of a hospital in upstate NY a number of years ago. I have done jobs from NE PA and as far west as Pittsburgh. Those were all stay the week, travel home for the weekend then travel back for the week. They averaged a couple of months of work. That kind of schedule gets real tedious, and I cant stand living out of a hotel room. My travel base now goes from a recurring job in DC to central NJ. About 3 hrs each direction from my door, and next week we will be starting a job on the DE shore, another 2 hrs away. Job should be a good one, drive not so much.

Kerry - I'm kinda in construction as well but on the design side. Actually I started out as an electrician and loved it. I still like working on smaller projects helping out friends and family. At the same time I went to school and got my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. For the next 30 years I worked as a consulting engineer for Architectural/Engineering and/or MEP Engineering firms.
17 years was with one international firm based out of London with offices all over the world. I was designing the MEP systems and overseeing construction for projects all over the world. They all require first to meet with the owners and during construction periodic site visits to check on the trades. Few of the projects I worked on near your neck of the woods include Delaware Art Museum and St. Elisabeth's Hospital in DC (it's no longer a hospital - worth looking up). I was also working on projects in China, India, Middle East, England, Ireland, Mexico and Brazil. One of the more interesting projects that I worked on was a mile high building in Jeddah. I designed the entire electrical infrastructure for the complex (very interesting and challenging when it comes to power distribution).
About 6 years ago the firm that I was with for 17 years decided to move out of Cambridge MA to Downtown Boston! I lost my parking spot and now was taking public transportation to work. I did not like that as I hate big cities and not having the ability of driving. For other reasons (and not being able to drive the birds to work ) I switched jobs but I was doing the same thing except now I was working on designing the MEP (more so electrical) infrastructure for the largest internet web search firms (data centers). Unfortunately the travel portion of the job got worse...

Skipping ahead I got involved with a project in downtown Boston for one of the worlds largest financial institutions. The facilities director left and I applied and got his job. It was okay and involved zero travel but I got board (not because I was not traveling but the work was not challenging). The firm also has a real estate division as they own many buildings and campus style complexes all over the states and world. The real estate division is also responsible for all leased sites. All of this equates to many millions S.F. of building space that is constantly evolving. The real estate division is huge with many designers, project mangers, engineers, etc. About a year ago the Director of Engineering retired after 30+ years at the same position... Guess what - I applied and got the Director of Engineering position. So now I'm responsible for all Engineering services for the entire portfolio. When I was doing design work I was maybe responsible for 2-3 large projects at a time but now I have 100s at a time. Obviously I am not involved with the day to day activates and have a large team that oversees the different sites, I still got involved especially when (TSHTF) A lot of the travel is for project work, new sites, response to incidents, meetings with the sites engineers, FMs and just to familiarize myself with the sites. I love the work and I work from home on the days that I'm not traveling (which is good) but the traveling is part of the job.

Next week is Albuquerque NM. I've never been (one of few states) since it's a leased site, it'll be more of meet and greet visit and I'll have a lot of time to explore.

I've only been there once.  But I vote for you to see the cliff dwellings.  They are amazing!

Jack: you might want to checkout the Unser racing museum.  It’s pretty cool.  https://unserracingmuseum.com/

We went to ABQ to visit my son and his family and ended up at the biopark with the kids.

I had some free time and went sightseeing and such, also was going to take the Sandia Tramway but ended up driving up. Also drove on route 66 between mile marker 4 and 5 about 5 times until I heared the musical highway. That was unbelievable.

What a sight. Wonder how many solar panels it took, to light that up.

I have been living in hotel rooms most of Oct. and the India trip did not help (2 days to go there and 2 days to return), but the good news is that I only have three more trips this year and 4 weeks of vacation that I must take or I will lose them.

Get your trips done this month Jack, and take the entire month of Dec. off. (I'm sure your company will be fine with that.)

Jack: glad to hear the job is working out well and I hope all the travels are smooth and uneventful.  I went to a few local car shows and “cars and coffee” events this year.  I hope you can slow down and go to events next season.  I was very fortunate to catch you during your brief hiatus and very much appreciate your work on my deck and stairs.  We need to have a beer sometime.
