Quick Ratio steering box
« on: April 24, 2022, 12:52:02 PM »
Hello all, I am new to this blog and became a member when seeing how much useful information and experience everyone has to offer. I am looking to upgrade the steering box in my '79 T/A which has the original 2 3/4 turn saginaw #7826692. The steering is the type that requires very minimal effort to turn and is taking away from a well tuned, restored suspension.  I have been racking my brain with so many options but looks like I may go with the Lares 1105. Has anyone used this box? How did it work out? Any recommendations? Appreciate the help!

I have had mixed results with the Dorman 3rd Gen 12:1

Some were perfect and tight, but the one I have now is sloppy.

Looking and a Borgeson at the moment.

I used a 2.6 turn lock to lock from Ames, it was built by Lares Corp. I've always been happy with the overall feel and handling of the car.

I'm planning to buy Grand Cherokee steering box. Can find it locally really cheap. I guess 1993-1998 will fit. Some say that they are all the same, some say 97 and 98 are the good ones(or maybe only 98). They also have different internal stops, wider end to end angle, which shouldn't be a problem cause TA has external stops.

I used a box from a 89 GTA. I just ordered a reman unit. Seems fine so far. Take note this box uses metric fittings but that was fine for me as I did a LS swap and the lines from the LS fit right in. You would need conversion fittings order an earlier box.
79 Trans am low buck LS swapped
79 Formula 301 (Work in progress)
67 RS Camaro (waiting it's turn)
69 Dodge charger on late model charger chassis
49 Ford F1 on a 2003 Chevy ZR2 Chassis (current project)
Names, Luke. If I hear anyone telling me they're my father....

Thank you everyone for the replies. I went with the Lares 1105 and updated coupler. Turned out well. The steering had a 2 1/2 lock to lock and the road feel and effort were right on. Feels like driving a more modern vehicle. Now to get this ride put on an alignment machine.
