Ever seen a newborn buffalo?

  The herd came by us yesterday and we saw four baby buffs.

Whats the story on those buffalo Mike? I cant imagine they are wild!
I took a trip to KY a few years ago and learned that at one time they were prevalent there, much to my surprise. Watching cowboy movies as a kid I just assumed they were only found in the dakotas

Scientist say 30 - 60 million Buffalo used to roam north America. By 1902 Buffalo were almost extinct with about two dozen left, today it is estimated the population is close to 500,000. Fermilab in Batavia IL was one of my sites in the late 70's, when visiting I often would take time to view the Bison. While on motor cycle rides my wife and I have seen wild Bison in Custer State park, South Dakota and in Yellowstone. We currently have a Bison ranch about 20 minutes from our home, its always a treat to see them.

One thing to keep in mind like any wild animal they should be treated with respect. Male Bison can weigh up to 2,000 lbs. They can run up to 35 mph. They are extremely protective their calves.

The herd has been here since I was little and can remember, and I'm 60.  They are part of the Land Between the Lakes (LBL) TVA property.  They have a large tract of land "the Bison Prairie" that bison and elk live on and thrive.  No hunting.  Government does selective reduction to maintain healthy herds.  Originally, buffalo ranged from the Rockies to the eastern states.  We also have a few private buffalo herds here, but these are at LBL.

We have seen them at Custer, SD and Yellowstone too.  No matter where I see them, I always act like it is my first time seeing a bison.  They are truly great animals to me.

Cool!  I knew Bison were nearly wiped out, but never realized how close to extinction they actually came.  Back in 1902 they estimated there were only 23 "wild" American Bison left in Yellowstone and a few hundred other's in privately held herds.  What an amazing come back with the population now exceeding 400,000.  It's incredible to think about the destruction by man of the millions and millions of Bison that once roamed the continent.  It's also so sad to think it took the final realization that this great creature was about to be gone forever before legislation was passed and enforced to ensure they survived.  Without the intervention of private individuals to establish "domesticated" herds, its quite possible that the picture taken above could have never happened.
