Rear Window Trim

The 1979 Trans Am that I recently purchased didn't have any rear window trim on it.

So I purchased new OER trim, but I'm struggling with how the sides connect in.

I have the top and bottom pieces in, and for the sides, one end is tapered so it very easily fits into the top piece.

From what I understand the side piece goes over the bottom piece, but its not large enough to do that it seems.

Figured I'd ask here before trying to pry things open / closed with some pliers to make it fit.

Pictures of both sides of the side trim are below, but I'm not sure they help.

The reproductions have a bad reputation for fit and appearance at bends. Not sure how many different sets are out there or just same rebranded. One trick was to use the nylon plastic retainers instead of the metal clips, a little more give in them.

I know that doesn't help your question! I didn't read it in full until half typed! I don't have any useful suggestions other than what you said, confirm which ends slides in and slightly spread the other so still a firm fit. Maybe add Vaseline or similar and wipe off after to prevent scrapes.

Yeah, there's no way those pieces connect.

Pretty disappointing as it wasn't inexpensive.

May have to try and find some used OEM pieces somewhere.

They sell a hell of a lot of those sets, so someone must know or they all just gave. Probably not the forum for getting answers though.

I guess they're thinking you will deform it just enough to work on your own, maybe.  The original trim was sort of that way.  They may have flared a little bit on the stamping of the ends, but it's not entirely clear.  That would be hard to do on blackened trim without scratching it.

I have not heard anything good about the repro window trim.

They sell a hell of a lot of these so someone must know or have installed them I the past. And since limited complaints, they never improve the product and others buy them unaware. That's the circle of life....
