Howdy and thanks for being here
« on: January 24, 2022, 08:48:59 PM »
I just moved my childhood daily driver up to my home to be re-restored after 25 years of sitting in my parents driveway. I finally have a little more money than when I went off to engineering school, I have one kid in college and one two years away,  and my 1981 Trans am is sitting in my garage.
I’ve spent a considerable amount of time on Facebook groups and watching YouTube and although they have been helpful, I’ve learned more about my car in 3 days lurking here. Pretty excited about finally getting her back up and on the road looking good. Some background. My dad and I restored the black trans am in the early 90’s. It used to be black and we changed it to maroon. Back in that day it was hard for us (before internet) to find the decal sets like you do today. It’s time to get her back to black with the gold eagle. I think mine was a SE with the smooth wheels but when we bought it in 1984 it had the snowflakes. Although the purists would say that the original wheels should be on there, I fell in love with the car with the snowflakes.
Just to tell you how much this car has been in my blood: my 5 year old birthday party featured a black trans am piñata.

Looking forward to being part of the group.

Good to see you.  Another forum to examine is the Performance Years, it would compliment this one.

Wildcatter,

From one Dallas area trans am enthusiast to another, good to hear you have the car and good luck with the restore.

Car looks good and I actually prefer the maroon over black. Looking forward to seeing more pictures and your plans to restore it.

You know I think so but I’m not sure. I have to pull/order the build sheet. Is there something on it that would tell you? I have the wipers with the pulse option (which is giving me trouble) if that helps identify it.

The special edition instrument panel would jive with the 'car was originally black with gold bird', being an S.E. It doesnt tell much more than you probably already know but you should order a PHS (Pontiac Historical Services) report. That may fill in some of the blanks. It will tell you how the car came from the factory, where it was sold new, what options etc. Not to bash on Jim M, but if you want to get a window sticker reproduction contact Mike Noun. His are more accurate than PHS. Then again Im not sure phs offers them anymore :?
