Hole in cowl side?
« on: October 23, 2021, 09:09:16 PM »
After taking pics for someone I noticed a small hole I'd forgotten about, in the front edge of the side cowl sheetmetal. You can see it in the pic. It's only on the RH side, but I have a matching dimple on the LH side, no hole. It's not very clean, as has the factory seam sealer wiped over it. It's only the front edge flange, not through to the inside of cowl.

I have a few photos of similar vehicles. Some have nothing, others have a mark or a dimple, none show a clear hole. Trying to think of weird Camaro seals or brackets or something to aid in construction, anyone noticed it on theirs? It's almost like a spotwelding hole that wasn't filled once aligned, but that doesn't explain dimple on other side.

I have two holes on both sides.  They are covered with seam sealer.

Its been awhile but I think I had them in my 77. The rh fender is installed on my 79 not easy access, the LH side is still off I can check there as well.

I am a bit confused, is that a pic of your car? You say a camaro shield. I dont think I have ever seen that part as installed. Not sure what it would do, def would help with alignment during installation.

Thanks again Wheels, didn't see the extra pics until now. Will have to look for the extra holes, albeit completely trivial if there. It may only identify Trans Ams and Formulas (!) that were used for SATB stunt scenes...

Kerry, yes, My 78 Formula. And yes it fitted with the Z87 option sound/water/heat shields that were a Camaro option. They are hidden and figured may add an extra level of seal prior to door and rubbers. All Firebirds/Camaros had the dimples for them, along with the top seal onto the cowl, not shown fitted.

They would perhaps be of extra use again on TA or 71 Formula that have the fender extractors, mainly when hosing around inside fenders, although were originally aimed at the more plush base models.

I feel pretty sure nothing is bolted to that hole.  I have never seen the jigs they used to weld up the car, but maybe there was a pin there during assembly of the body shell or something.
