Factory 15x7 vs 15x8 Tyre Size
« on: October 17, 2021, 06:58:38 PM »
Does anyone know exactly what tyre size was on a standard 15x7 car? Does it matter what tyre option was selected on the buildsheet/ordered from the dealer? Or were all 15x7 wheels till ordered with the same size just different brand/quality tyres?

From what I understand the factory 1979 onwards WS6 tyre size was 225/70/R15, was it different in 1978? What was the factory tyre size for the 15x7 Rally II and snowflake cars? Did it change from 1970-78?

Interesting, I thought that may have been the case. Huh, go figure, I had seen from so many sources the 15x8's included in the WS6 were supposed to have larger tyres. I believe RPO QCY tyres were included in WS6, and conveniently, that looks like what the '78 Formula was optioned with on the dealer invoice, so now I know I just need to get four sets of the same tyre.

Shame most retailers down here don't stock 225/70/r15 BFGoodriches! I was hoping to get a bulk deal

Yup, found a a pretty original 1978 403 W50 for $750, wasn't gunna say no for a complete numbers matching car. I actually made a few Firebird acquisitions lately, hence why I need so many tyres lol. Even had the original paint under a sloppy blue paint job, always liked the W50/Macho styling and until I find that Macho in Vic, it's looking like a good beater. Have the original Rallies too, since they're the same as the Torana/Monaro wheels I can get them redone by a friend.

Right now, I think coming up from Melbourne with a black '78 WS6 I bought, lockdown down there delayed everything as per usual  :-(

It's not anything great, but I've seen the market in Australia very drastically climb, and I thought for how cheap it was, and how clean I can make it, it would be a smart "investment". The previous owner made a lot of very dumb modifications to the car, I bought it thinking it was originally a Martinique Blue car as he showed me photos from when he bought it and it was blue with a cheap hood decal. He painted it black wanting to turn it into some pro-touring-esque car but just did such a bad job of it. The paint job is abysmal for a 2 month old spray. At least it has a healthy buildsheet, numbers matching, rebuilt motor and relatively clean Californian car. I intend to completely strip the interior, engine bay and get the car a decent respray, it's already black but the paint quality is super bad. I have all the original interior & seats as some goober put this whacky two-tone blue interior in it, might have looked decent if it was marty blue, but won't look good with the black. Both of these cars came with some extra 400 Pontiac's, doors, fenders and sets of 15x8 snowies so thought eh might as well keep myself busy during lockdown. Everything has re-opened down here though, but, my job won't go back into the office so I get plenty of time to sort them out.
