Cowl-to-Firewall caulking question
« on: August 23, 2021, 12:47:12 PM »
On my Trans Am, I'm trying to restore the cowl and firewall area. Just clean-up and repaint. There's some caulking on the upper cowl that mates to the top of the firewall.

Does everybody just use the 3M Strip-Calk strips? Just press into the gap and leave unpainted? Thanks!

For that area I would not use the caulking strips. I would go with a brushable seem sealer. Factory was really slopped on there, but you can put some blue tape down and make it much neater.

I use seam sealer and use a brush dipped in wax & grease remover to recreate the look of the original brushed on sealer.

Wallington has great information  :-D  Like Not a TA I have dipped a brush in a mild gun cleaning solvent first then use that brush to smoot out the sealer. I have used the small acid brushes. On the floor for my 79 I recently did I just gobbed it on. Looked pretty much factory. Of course that will be covered up.
