Shaker crack repair
« on: April 20, 2021, 12:42:29 PM »
Small crack near drain hole. Can be repaired on the bottom side. Will fiberglass repair kit do the trick or do I need the plastic repair kit?

I like those melt and twist wire inserts, although more of an ABS thing than fibreglass. I'd still want to grind it back, bridge the crack with supporting material, then fill level again. I've done some fibreglass patching but nowhere that matters, leave that to the pros.

Yeah I think mine (79) is a plastic material. But I'll give the fiberglass kit a try. The newer plastics need a special glue, a 2 part thing with a special applicator. I tried to fix a mid 90's snowmobile hood with fiberglass and the outcome was a perfect mold. it popped off a few hours later.

fixed with fiberglass

WOW! This gets my seal of approval, LOL.   Great job.  I have one that has a corner broke off and thought about doing similar but wasnt sure how it would turn out. You have given me inspiration.

Tigger, You should be able to fix with 'glass. I would take a dremel and grind out the crack, maybe even drill a hole at the end of it, I have heard that will keep the crack from migrating. Then with a minimal amount of material you can fill with 'glass. I would use a bit of the fabric as well for reinforcement. Once that stuff sets up it sands ok. You can always touch up with a bit of rage body filler if the 'glass isnt perfectly smooth.

The epoxy that came with the repair kit worked fine. Nice and sturdy now.
