Shaker gasket cement suggestions

Bought a new gasket, in the reviews most say the plastic pins dont line up and the glue them on. what to use? thanks

I glued mine with 3m weather strip cement. Use the glue sparingly that stuff is like Franks Red Hot. It gets everywhere! I used blue tape to hold it into place whilst it set up.  I  have an original shaker that I just took the original rubber seal off of and there were no pins used on that one. Pins may be an aftermarket type thing.

Thanks, I believe I have that stuff in m tool box. It's kind of a yellowish color. I used it on my sons Grand Am to stick "ram air"  on the fender.

The stuff I used is black. Like I said, masking tape will be your friend and apply it sparingly. Once it sets up it will hold great, just can be a goopy job installing.

For what it’s worth I personally have tried the 3m stuff in the past without desirable results but as it turns out I was using it wrong. I ran across a video about using it which, from memory, suggested spreading a thin coat on both the rubber and surface it will be attached to. I think they suggested waiting like 5 or ten minutes then applying the two together. I haven’t tried to redo my shaker seal yet but that did make a big difference in the other applications I was using. It was a mess before. Maybe everyone knew that and I was the only one doing it wrong before lol. Live and learn.

GM used their own contact adhesive #9985127, no longer available, but contact glue is what you want to suit neoprene and paint. Olds used a slightly different pin arrangement, at least one was moved outwards slightly, but unlikely affected install of same seal.

I would have never thought of contact cement. But if GM did it, must be the way to go. I will give that a go on my current project. I have used the tightbond stuff from home depot for years in my woodworking trade. IF you go this route, I would def tape off a line around the edge the width of the seal. Do a dry run and put a reference point where to start with the installation. Put the glue on the shaker and the rubber seal. Make sure its completely dry then 'bam' youre good to go. Just keep in mind though that once it sticks youre done. Also make sure the glue is dry.

Yeah, the yellow stuff I have is 3M  Plastic and emblem adhesive. Not weather stripping adhesive. It dries hard and actually smells like contact adhesive. Although contact adhesive is cheap enough. I do have 3M  M77 spray contact adhesive but that would make a mess.

I think I would be tempted to try ( and thats how I plan on doing mine now) the tightbond stuff ( i think its tightbond, I would have to go into the shop to look at the can I have to be sure).  Pretty sure you can get a quart can, more than enough than you would most likely ever need. Probably cost $20 or so. Get a cheap $2 2" chip brush to apply it. Spray would probably be ok but you would have to tape the rubber strip off so not to get it everywhere.

Yes, if using contact adhesive make sure it's safe on paint. Otherwise you'll end up lifting it like those who tried using it for center cap emblems *cough cough*

Cant find contact adhesive in the local hardware stores, find that odd.  I used weather strip adhesive from 3M and it works, kinda. sticks fine of the straight areas. Dont stick at all on the corners. Had to remove the black crap and tape it off and used M77 spray in those areas. years ago I used the contact adhesive with a brush in the bottle. It was still in place 25 years later.  I dont know if the weather strip stuff will last. We'll see.

Is odd you couldnt find contact cement. You should be fine with the 3m stuff. It seems kinda runny and thin (and messy) but let it set up properly and it will work. Thats all I used on mine, I used blue tape to hold everything in place for a day or two.
