Diecast Endeavor
« on: March 21, 2021, 07:57:38 PM »
So I recently I picked up this lot and The idea is to repaint 3 of them in the different ideas I have to try and decide what direction to go in with Ruby

2021-02-11_11-46-15 by Charles Marson, on Flickr

Then a few days ago I found this beauty

2021-03-21_07-00-31 by Charles Marson, on Flickr

I picked up 3, 1 for my sons collection, 1 for my collection and one to strip apart and repaint the way I decide in the previous exercise

I have currently striped two other cars, one being a 71 VW Bus and the other a 52 Chevy pickup. I will be practicing on these before I start on the birds.

I didn't take picks of this yet but I will

to assist me I found my kit, purchased an airbrush as I couldn't find the one I had and picked up my compressor from dads in storage

Charlie, can’t wait to see what you end up with.

Kev, those look awesome. I’ve wanted to try at least re-decaling a black model to look like my black 77 w/charcoal and red decals. Maybe someday I will

Good Deal!  I have at least 50 car models from the 70's, most the standard size (what ever that is) some of the larger scale ones, some are metal Hubleys.  I have carted them from house to house with my wife threatening to throw them away.  I keep saying that one of these days I am going to dig into them and start to do some 'restorations'. Gotta be cheaper and take up less room than a real car.
I have a real nice large scale 79 TATA model to complete also

I'm Curious to see how that model of your turns out Kerry

Kev, if I can make mine look half as nice as those I'd be doing good. How did you get the hood birds scaled down to look good? EDIT: disregard. I just went back and started reading

I'd also be interested to hear some does and don'ts, tips and tricks as well if you'd be willing to share

I'd also be interested to hear some does and don'ts, tips and tricks as well if you'd be willing to share

These were the 1/18th scale, so pretty big models that had screws and not rivets to disassemble.  The body's I didn't sand, I powder blasted with a little handheld sand blaster at low pressure, it didn't take much to remove the black paint.  All the models were the same color at start.  I used a non-etching primer, was not wanting to sand them after I primed them and then painted.  I am a body and paint pro by trade when I started my career, but no longer in it.

The decals were the hardest, have messed around with graphics for about 20 years now, so that went pretty smooth.  I just used CorelDraw and Decal Maker.

However, these are smaller scale, not sure how they would turn out.  I would test one for you, but I don't have any inkjet printers any longer.  I may could dig one up at work, maybe.

These were done almost 15 years ago, so I'm surprised they still look good.

Hope this helps.

No worries about the printer...seems like a lot of work

I have an inkjet, decal paper, and I am using Photo Shop...just a mater of figuring out how small to make it and orient it on the 8.5x11 sheet of decal paper

practice first

Found my dremel tool and cleaned off the cobwebs

20210326_114808 by Charles Marson, on Flickr

I also stripped the paint off the the VW bus and Chevy pickup, and primed, and painted the first layer of white.

20210324_142932 by Charles Marson, on Flickr

20210326_071442 by Charles Marson, on Flickr

If you look close you can see where my arm touched the roof of the bus and I also didn't clean the diecast properly so the primer wasn't sticking well in some spots on the 52 and paint peeled off. So, I stripped everything and started over.

After that happened I couldn't leave the back windows closed off so out came the dremel and files and this happend

20210326_142028 by Charles Marson, on Flickr

20210326_142046 by Charles Marson, on Flickr

I was having thoughts of adding LED lights to the bus, which I haven't given up on but this time around I think I'll try to get some practice in first before making my life more complicated.

thanks for looking

Not much progress with this endeavor, as I have been dealing with a lot other personal issues, and trying to get some yard work and landscaping done. I have painted and re-painted both the truck and the VW several times, and haven't been happy with he results until recently with truck, but not so much with VW so it will be getting redone yet again.

The truck needs to painted red with a white roof and eventually the VW will match. The truck currently sits with a white base colour, which I'm happy with but the last working session I was having issues with paint and with the airbrush.

The Firebird - I'm still sculpting the wheel spoilers I made for it but I'm getting close and then that will be ready for paint. We haven't had much rain to keep me inside and other projects have been a priority.

Thanks for looking

So much for spending more time on these...story of my life

I have done some work to the silver blue striped Trans Am in the first picture. It will be gold when finished and I have made a chin spoiler, and fender flares for it. I also cut out the t-tops, and I'll be replacing the tires I stole off a different car. looks good.

In the mean time, check out what I scored at the grocery store, but my wife only gave me enough time to find the one.

I'm not sure if that's the look they're for or not but I don't mind the paint on that one and I may just leave it alone!!

Well, I finally made time to get my Christmas Trans Am car finished and I think I'm happy with it overall. So without further adieu:
