Console Restoration
« on: March 16, 2021, 07:27:44 AM »
My 4 speed console was literally broken in half. I was going to put it in the trash bin, but after seeing prices of decent used ones, and not really wanting to go reproduction I figured I would give it a shot at a new life. I have done several dash repairs successfully and figure with the same technique and products this would be similar. I used Polyvance padded dash filler, along with SEM int. dye products, SEM texture coating, SEM colour, and SEM final clear coat.

Console is a bit different than the dash. The dash has a 'spongey backer' with a harder face material. The console is hard plastic with almost a vinyl like covering/finish.

I peeled back the loosed covering to expose the hard plastic, stitched things together with some temporary straps then proceed to fibreglass the inside to repair the crack.  I then fibreglassed the outside as well.  Over the fibreglass I used the dash filler, many light coats until everything sanded smooth then coated with the SEM.

Your salvage of the dash and now the console is nothing short of amazing.  Very nice work!

What did you do to duplicate the vinyl graining?

The console is a different material/grain altogether than the dash. I only used the sem texture spray and it looks close enough for my taste.

Hey Kerry, I know this is an older thread but I’m wondering if you could explain what you did when you said you fiberglassed the inside and outside. Thanks.
