Fenders Original? Or OEM replaced?
« on: April 22, 2022, 07:39:13 AM »
Hey guys, as some of you might know I am in the process of restoring my 1980 Trans Am and was curious about something.
I know the front fenders where changed since the previous owner told me.
However I was wondering about something when it comes to fenders.
Is there a tag\code on Firebird fenders that will tell me if it's original to a car?
If not is there a tag\code that will tell me if the fender is from Pontiac or an aftermarket?
Thanks

Unfortunately I don’t have an answer for you. But I wanted to complement you on your project, looks like quite an undertaking and is looking great.

Thanks for the support :)  Allot of people told me i was crazy to start this project but I have always wanted to do it.  I am a car guy but i am not a mechanic or a body man.  But lucky for me i have good friends.  One  is a mechanic and another is an experienced body man.  With their guidance I am making it through this process and learning allot.  You are never told old to learn right :)     I have been cray about this Trans Ams ever since i have been 5 or 6 years old.  Actually it's more like obsessed :)

I thought that it was time to get this old girl and save another classic from going to the crusher.

It sounds like you have the right mindset for this project. Considering how many hours it takes to pull off a restoration like this you have to really like these cars. There are many who give up halfway through and I believe it's because they aren't obsessed enough.  :D

Photos show great progress BTW.

Yes, the original fenders have a date code. I think its in the centre just inside where the hood would sit. As far as I know I think all of the individual factory parts have some sort of coding. I have no idea how to read what is on the fender though as to time frame of build.

And many repro fenders for TA models include holes for both 70-78 and 79-81 flares.
