'00 Chevy K2500HD Crew-Cab Short-Bed
« on: April 14, 2021, 08:05:59 PM »
Thought I would share my new project I picked up today that I'm crazy excited about.  I know this sounds insane but I just traded my running/driving '95 K2500 for a '00 K2500 that needs front suspension rebuilt (not drivable right now).

For those on this forum who may not know, the '88-'98 Chevy/GMC trucks were offered up to '00 while the new LS platform trucks entered into production during '99.  So basically in '99-'00, you could go to Chevy/GMC dealerships and buy what was called the OBS (Old Body Style) up through the '00 model year.  This one is a final year '00 model.

To dive in even further on these, all crew-cab '88-'98 GM trucks were long-bed.  '99-'00 were the only two years you could buy a crew-cab short-bed with the 88'-'98 body style.  These are not very common.  I always wanted one but I never thought I would get one.  Been busy with work but I will post more pictures/project stuff later on once I have time to play around with it more.

Untitled by Jonathon Randolph, on Flickr

Day one was rough.  The guy I traded with let me swap the my Hummer wheels over but during that process I came across one stud with messed up threads.  I tried threading the lug nut on by hand and attempted to force the rest with on my impact gun but I ended up stripping that 1 lug nut unfortunately.  That was not the most fun getting rusty steel wheel off to swap over but we got the wheels swapped before the tow truck driver came.  The next issue was the motor started up and ran great when I looked at it and when I got it home, the thing didn't want to start.

Time to start wrenching on another project.

Jonathan,

Truck looks very clean. I don’t see any rust, often one of the biggest issues in the Midwest.

Man, that was an awesome truck you had.  As good as it gets in GMT400 world.  Too bad the MPG wasn’t good for your situation.  I was close to pulling the trigger on going getting a loan for it but I’m glad you were able to sell it quick...within a week if I recall.

Day # 2 was not a fun one for discovery.

First, I listened to the previous owner's suggestion that there was no gas in it for why it's not starting.  Borrowed a few gas cans from my neighbor and started filling the tank.  After I started filling the tank, I noticed it was leaking fuel as I was filling it up.  This showed me that somewhere on the filler neck is leaking.

After that, I had my neighbor come over and help me out with the no-start diagnosis because it was still not starting after I put gas in it.  We found a popped horn fuse and then he used his electrical tester to check the block.  For some reason the fuel pump relay isn't getting power.  While under the truck, I noticed day light coming through the bed.  After going on top, I ended up finding someone cut a big hole in the bed floor to gain access to the gas tank pump and all the wires were laying everywhere.  I also missed the truck bed issue because it has a big piece of plywood in it, with a plow strapped on top and a bed full of debris from being at a house under trees.  I have no clue how this guy got this truck to run when I went to look at it.

After figuring out that this thing has major issues with the fuel/electrical system and bed being cut open, I broke out my pressure washer.  Started blasting out the engine bay, door jams and areas I could reach under the body.  Lower cab corners and rockers completely blew apart from rust hiding under the paint.  That was not fun to have the bottom exterior fall apart but I expected that to happen.

Finished up title registration/plates today so I was happy to put that bill behind me.  My local Currency Exchange classified the truck for B Plate but I'm still kind of wary that they placed the registration in that manner.  The title says light truck/pickup and my last K2500 did not need the B plate but the individual working said all titles that say "Pickup" require a B plate.

Good luck with your new project; a truck like that is certainly handy.  Power washing is the first thing I would do as well; especially a greasy engine and front end.  That relay should somehow be fed by the ignition; probably something small.  I think there are patch panels for most trucks.

I'm not a truck guy, but this is an interesting project. Not that you asked for my opinion but this -is- the internet, so you get it anyway....I like it.  It's an interesting truck in my book and you have my blessing. Proceed.
CCSB...Learned something new today!  Thank you!
Sorry to hear you ran into some unpleasant surprises.  Sending positive energy your way.  Hope all the future surprises are happy ones.

Are the Hummer rims a thing on CCSBs? Both these trucks have the Hummer rims, no?

Congrats on findings something rare you've had on your list. That's always cool.  Good luck with your new project!

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the interest.  The Hummer H2 wheels are commonly used for swap many GM 8-lug applications and even Ford guys have used them.  The Hummer H2 was actually built off of the GM 2500 chassis.   Pretty much a bolt-on swap.  Yea, both me and Ryan have/had the Hummer wheels on these trucks.  If I recall, these are the largest GM offering (17"x8.5") 8-lug before they switched the bolt pattern around 2009-2011.  I went this route for a budget alternative to expensive aftermarket wheels.

Finally got around to cleaning out the bed on the truck while on my lunch break today.  Finding the cut bed was a bummer but at least has given me good insight as to why this truck is not running.  This bed was filled with a ton of debris.  Filled up my little shop vac twice and then filled up the rest of a garbage bag with leaves.

Aside the from the bad fuel pump wiring that needs to be reworked, I may need to replace the gas tank.  The first part that needs to be ordered here is a filler neck hose.  As mentioned before, I tried putting gas in the truck and it was leaking as I poured fuel in.  If I can get away with just doing the hose and wires, this may be a cheap fix.

Fingers crossed!

Alright guys, finally an update on this project...

Although I haven't done any updates on the thread this past month, I have been chipping away at it slowly here and there.  A few weeks ago, I replaced the rear brake hard lines, axle hose and painted the rear drums.  Got lucky in this department because I found the previous owner install new rear brakes but he never finished the job.

Big mess on the front brakes/suspension.  I ordered front Powerstop brakes from Rock Auto in May.  When I started taking apart the front brakes to redo everything, I found the previous owner tried to install the newer '99-'06 brakes but didn't do the job correct.  Since it took me 'til July/August to figure it out, I was beyond the return date for my Rock Auto purchase and they don't have any customer service contact I know of.  I would've like to have the newer style brakes but I ended up needing to find a parts truck in my area with original style spindles for my truck.

Before...
Untitled by Jonathon Randolph, on Flickr

This is kind of funny but my grandma saw all the new parts when she came to my house yesterday and urged me to paint the frame/wheel well.  She's not much of a car person, but she did notice all the shiny new stuff.  Today, I did just that.  Took everything apart, broke out the grinder, cleaned the frame, laid down some primer, painted and reassembled.  Thanks for the push on this one Grandma!  haha

Had to call it quits early but I feel this was a good stopping point.  Got the new hubs, rotors, wheel studs, lower ball joint, shock and upper control arm loosely fitted.  Even though this is stock replacement, the Bilstein shocks and Powerstop brake kit really do make it look nice.

Those calipers are a superb unit - we use them on a lot of conversions!  Dodge even used them from 1995 to 99 on their 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks.  Very low profile and light for the power the exert.

Got the passenger side almost all buttoned up.  Still need to attach the steering arm and plumb the brake hard line.  The next step will be doing the same with suspension rebuild on the driver side.  After I finish the other side, I will work on the steering to connect everything back together.

For now, I'm happy to have the truck sit on the ground normally.  I can definitely tell the tire sits better due to the ball joint fitting correct with an original spindle.  Time to give the neighbors a break from looking at a jack stand.

Hey guys,

Just want to give FYI that I won’t be updating my build for a while.  I was working on my truck on Monday and accidentally dropped the spindle on my finger.  I hate the terminology but this unfortunately has caused an “amputation” of my finger tip during a surgery yesterday.  I will be needing to address important things such as health insurance, medical bills and getting back to work.

If anyone wants to check in or see how things are going, send me a PM.

Thanks,
Jon

Yea, not really much to say at this point.  Been a long week and I have to just work past this time period.  Kind of strange saying this but the surgery hurt way more than the injury.  Pain since yesterday has been bad.

Alright guys, first update for the year on my truck.  I've actually been driving with this modification the past few months.  I found an '87 Pontiac GTA Trans Am getting parted out near me a few months ago and got the steering wheel.  This is nearly a direct bolt-on but the only thing that didn't fit correct was the plastic collar intersected the plastic column trim.  I trimmed the collar back about 1/2"-1" and it pretty much bolted on from there.  One issue I have is the wheel being super close to the controls but I've gotten used to it driving.

The people that I know have seen it don't like it but I'm happy to include some Pontiac in the truck for myself.  Haven't driven the Trans Am in nearly 10 years so it feels good to at least have a Trans Am steering wheel in the truck for now.

This mod was short lived as I reversed back to original.  Installed a GTA Trans Am seat in the truck.  Literally bolted on without modifications.  Part of me wants to install the GTA seat again but I would have to get a non-bench seat track for my driver seat to work.  Either way, figured this one would be a fun Trans Am related post on the forum for now.
