In 1982 we bought my wife a new TA, in the beginning she was thrilled, as time went on not so much. We had a problem with gasoline fumes leaking into the passenger compartment. Under warranty we took it back to the dealer, they didn't find anything. We brought it back again; they replaced both engine air filters at a cost of $90.00. The car had 6,000 miles, didn't need air filters and had fuel injection that in theory should adjust the fuel mixture to compensate for dirty filters. Several years later we had our first child and I was concerned the car would catch on fire or blow up with my daughter buckled up in the back seat. At this point the car was about 2 1/2 years old, also a line of rust where the sail panel met the roof appeared. We traded the car in on a new four door Honda Accord. After we got rid of the TA there was a recall something to do with the fuel tank venting.
In the long run we were much better off with the Accord. My wife missed the TA and thought was more fun to drive, but the Accord was much more practical. In those days it wasn't just GM, I think all American brand cars were pretty crappy. I guess we can thank the Japanese for raising the bar forcing everyone to up their game.
