For the record, the blades I found that worked and are the proper height are Trico 18-2. As you can see in my video they work just fine lol.

Kerry, I don’t blame you about the bottom getting dirty. My car is a driver, not a restoration. And although I often have the desire to clean up the bottom side, I know with how much I drive it it’ll jus make me mad when it gets filthy. That’s my story anyway 😁

Thanks I may have to give those blades a try.  I’m with you guys that I’m also anal about the bottom side of the car getting dinged up & dirty after spending all that time painting it.  Never had that concern on any other car in my life :D

Today I had lunch with a close friend, we met in fall of 1968 as high school freshmen. He also has been a Pontiac loyalist and owned many Firebirds. He is currently fighting a cancer battle but we try to get together once a week when possible.

Today he gave me this. Since the bag is unopened, I would call it a NOS part.

I wont take my car out if its raining, but have been caught in a few showers. Didnt break my heart, LOL. I am more worried about the underside getting dirty than the top   I restored the bottom with paint to look like the red oxide and everything was pristine when I finished. Now no way I can clean under there. I can wax and clean the top part pretty easy.

Well, I am glad I am not the only one here who is a little OCD and likes to keep the underneath of my cars clean.

This is the underneath of my 1970 Road Runner that I did about 25 years ago. It was a Texas car and all original sheet metal. I didn't intend to do the underneath; it was one of those things where it got out of hand.
img20230421_19360367 by Lawrence Alexander, on Flickr

Some here will remember my 1980 TA was undercoated from the dealer. I started out removing the undercoating from the rocker panel bottoms and ended up doing the entire car. Using a heat gun and then mineral spirits, a lot of hours involved. This is the original factory finish. I avoid rain and have already wiped the underneath a couple of times.

Yeah I actually enjoyed doing the painting of the underside as no one would ever notice if I screwed it up.  I went with Iron Oxide paint from KBS coatings and Rust Bullet metal prep.  Here’s a shot pre-installing the LS3.

Did some superb license plate work on the 77 and took it to a small car show last week. Was about 65 miles round trip, all highway. It's definitely a highway warrior, loves sitting between 75-80mph and smooth as silk.

I have been busy with family related stuff for the last couple of weeks. I end up having about 8 hrs to kill during the day in the city. Too far to drive back home. So, have been spending a lot of time window shopping. I ran across this at target, I dont have a lot of scale cars and never really wanted to fall into that trap but I couldnt help myself.

Then on yet another day at another Target I had to get this as a compliment. Never seen any of the rocky movies but thought this was pretty cool.

On top of everything that we have going on right now, my wife thought this was the best time to get another puppy. Hence the story behind the other thread of getting scammed. She got the speckled one (Quincey) around Christmas. Our other dogs are old and cantankerous and wanted nothing to do with her. So, she wanted to get a 'playmate'. Picked up the little black girl (Sooki) last week. I am known as the dog whisperer in my house as they naturally gravitate towards me. I havent had anything to do with either of these so they wont get attached to me. They are HER dogs. Quincey goes everywhere she does including work every day. We had a Frenchie years ago, he was a good dog but dumber than a box of rocks. These 2 so far seem to be much better.

Met up with a fellow TAC member B_hill_86 (Brian), which I always think is really cool. Some of the folks I am friends with on here are hundreds if not thousands of miles away and some are in my back yard. Anyways his car is super clean and beautiful! It makes my car look like garbage. His car makes me really want to finish mine now and really clean up my engine bay (which I will reluctantly show).

Both cars.

My pathetic engine bay.

Thanks for the kind words! I really dig your car too. I’m jealous of your t-tops and your LS power. Mine is far from perfect and it never will be. Your subframe connectors got me thinking on the way home I may have to invest in a set someday too. Tighten things up a bit.

It was nice to meet you and your son. I’m sure we’ll cross paths again at some point!

I will say, the LS easily starts and as you can confirm,  it can lay rubber any time it wants even with my fairly wide tires with 273 gears.

Good looking pair of cars there. Cant see any negatives with either one!!  Its nice to get to meet a fellow forum member in person. I have quite a few that I would like to call good friends from a little further in depth communication via phone calls, texts, emails but I have also met a few in person. All have been good. Would like to meet some more of you guys in person one of these days.

Mom has been wanting a classic car for a while but we haven’t found anything quite right. Today we took a look at a 71 mustang Mach 1, never been a fan of mustangs but I am a sucker for a fastback. It is completely disassembled but everything is there, it was working and driving before. Unfortunately it has Minnesota rust but what doesn’t up here, owner has patch panels for a whole new car. Since it’s family owned we are getting a discount, $4500, for it all and it’s mostly original except the engines been replaced for one that isn’t blown to smithereens, 351c 2v, 4 speed, dash, fenders, etc etc. crazy good deal, hard to pass on. Although this isn’t a Ford forum maybe I’ll make a small thread on my progress, I know barely anything, especially body work, but I have a lot of people that can teach me things. More than likely biting off way more than I can chew but oh well.

Shook hands on the mustang, just need to bring everything home. Gonna be a huge job but I don’t have many responsibilities at the moment. Will make a thread for it for sure, literally will need to learn everything. All my car knowledge comes from my trans am and that was already put together. Rust repair and paint is where I might struggle and it’s gonna be the first steps.

Sounds like fun. That car def. has potential. I am ok with mustangs (being my wife owns one ), the mach I's are def my favorites. If I could give any suggestion (coming from someone that has been working on his car for 5+yrs now, LOL), take it one piece at a time. When I did my 77 it needed a lot of rust repair/replacement. I started at one corner and worked my way around.

My buddy just picked up a 455 for his 71 LeMans T37, and when he came back to check the numbers they came up with 485428 and 4x heads. When I ran the numbers on the block, they come up for a 1972 HO 455 block! But can someone help me identify if this is really an HO 455 motor?

Thanks,
Ryan

According to Rocky Rotella's book, 485428 block would be correct for a 1972 455 HO. The 485428 casting was used in 1970, 1971 and 1972 455's. The only real difference between a 445 HO block and a standard 455 is four bolt main caps. I think the standard 455 block was drilled and taped for four bolt caps, but only had two bolt caps installed. I don't believe there was any difference in pistons, rods or crankshaft from standard to HO. In the rear of the block where the distributor plugs in should be a two letter block code, for a 1972 455 HO that code should be WD, WM, YB or YD.

A 1972 455 HO would have had 7F6 heads (round port exhaust), not 4X. The 455 HO also would have come with an aluminum intake manifold with a cast iron exhaust cross over.

Since your engine has a remanufactured sticker, it has likely been bored.

Good point on the overbore! I'll see if he can take a picture of the bores and see what kind of pistons it has.

Not so much “Today I….” but for the sake of discussion, “Recently I….” pulled my quadrajet off for a short project and in the meantime I threw on a Holley 3310 that was on the car back when I bought it. I pulled the Holley and replaced it with a Qjet years ago but having never worked on a carb before, I decided to rebuild the Holley a year or two ago just for the heck of it. I did so and installed that back on the car for a short time while I tore my Qjet apart to mess with a few things with the idle circuit and ultimately installed some primary shaft bushings. Not a bad job at all. In fact, I feel like knowing WHAT to do is harder than tearing one apart. They aren’t hard.

Anyway, one thing I didn’t mess with before I reinstalled the Qjet were the well plugs. They’d been epoxied and weren’t leaking. Unfortunately that didn’t last much longer as this year I noticed harder starting especially after sitting so off it came again and back on went the Holley for a bit. I drilled out the old lead plugs, tapped them and installed threaded plugs which I sealed as part of a kit available from Cliff Ruggles. Qjet went back on, so far so good and the Holley is banished back to a box since I seem to have a hard time selling or getting rid of things sometimes.

That was last weekend. Unrelated,  this weekend I decided to finally attend a Cars & Coffee event put on the the owner/administrator of United F-body, another Firebird/Camaro forum. He (Roger) lives a bit north of Detroit about an hour and a half from me and has put this on for a few years and always invited me up. It’s an hour and a half via I-75 right through Detroit which I wasn’t so keen on so the route around it was pushing 2 hoirs. That’s the longest/farthest I’ve driven my car in one trip so although it was a little nerve wracking initially it went off without a hitch.

Another UFB member drove  up from Columbus so we met here in Toledo Saturday morning and drove the remaining almost 2 hours up together. He drove an all original, 44,000 mile ‘69 Camaro with a straight 6 and a 3 speed manual. There was a great turnout (with pics on UFB if so interested) and to boot, Roger was kind enough to gift me a few things.

First, I recently determined my car was originally sold at a dealership in Ferndale, Mi, called Belcastro Pontiac not real far from me. Roger happens to have been collecting dealer keychains and had a Belcastro keychain he gave me which I can’t thank him enough for. He also noted that the nose emblem on my car was painted grey, the same as the inner portions of my snowflakes and my window trim. The wheels and trim were an effort to set the car apart from others subtly but the nose emblem was  simply due to the original being horribly faded and me not wanting to spend the money at the time to replace it. Fast forward 10+ years and it’s still there. He had a GM replacement that he also gave me which I also can’t thank him enough for.

Not including those things it was well worth the trip anyway. There were a lot of beautiful cars and nice people.

That really cool. I used to have drive up to Detroit and visit some customers in some really, really shady parts of town. It terrified me. No way would I want to drive my car their. Now, drive through, maybe but like you my car hasn't been on any long trips.  Last week I has over your way, (Near Owen's College) meeting a few friends and getting icecream with my son. That was an hour of driving and that was the most thus far.

The key chain is a cool subtle addition. The nose emblem really lights up the front. I didn't even notice that when I saw your car but it really makes it pop! Thanks for sharing!

That keychain is cool, great that the guy gave you the stuff. Glad you were able to make the trip without problems. About 6 months after my car was on the road it left me stranded with a bad starter. I had been gun shy for the longest time even to the extent that If I went somewhere I was afraid to turn the car off. 6 years later I have not had a problem. My son convinced me last year that I better drive and enjoy my car while I still can. Im not getting any younger, LOL. My first 'long' trip was to Hershey last year about an hr. or so each way. Just recently we went to Gettysbury a little over 2 hr each way. These trips went off without a hitch. I have overcome my fear of driving and would take it just about anywhere at this point. After all the motor was rebuilt and to date probably has less than 3000 miles. When I took my first long trip I wanted to avoid the 'super highways' so I took all back roads. The ironic part was that there was about a 10 mile stretch that I HAD to get on the highway. That was the best part of the ride as the car settled in at 65 mph with no problems. My biggest limitation at this point is the 12 mpg

I forgot to ad, are you Ohio guys near the Akron area? We have our one horse town cable channel, Armstrong. Their HQ is in Butler PA and they have a local channel that shows a lot of car shows. They are all in the Akron and surrounding areas. Seems like a lot of car stuff goes on around there.

It's like 3 hrs away or less. Ya, I only get that gas mileage when I launch from every stop sign/light. My LS does really well. Only problem is I do launch it at every opportunity..... My car is sideways more than straight these days. Good thing I didn't have the HP back when I was a teenager....

I actually figured my mileage for the first time for a long highway trip. I was running 65-70 most of the way and ended up with 16.4mpg. That included a couple hard 1st and 2nd gear pulls right after the gas station Friday night so it might have been slightly better. Quadrajet, 4 speed and a 3.08 rear so not bad I’d say.

I never knew Akron had a lot of car stuff. I’ve been that way for work a few times but that’s it. And not even in Akron itself.

That's pretty impressive mileage! For reference I took my car for the longest ride to date, 186 miles. A mixture of a lot of stop and go traffic but also some 55 - 60 MPH stretches. I got 14.76 MPG, 461 Pontiac, with EFI, turbo 350 trans and 2.41 rear end. The only other time I ever computed milage on one of my Trans Am's was my 1973 TA when it was brand new. I did a road trip about 500 miles highway and interstate. Stock 455, turbo 400 and 3.08 rear end. Got in the low 13's. After I built the car up it milage got much worse.

My trip was exactly 180 miles and mostly highway until the last 15-20 minutes or so but that was very easy driving around 40mph with few stops and easy take-offs. Your trip in the 461 doesn’t sound far off though with lots of stop and go. That’s gotta kill the mileage in these I’d think.

It’s no Prius but I was pleasantly surprised with the MPG

Well, changing gears (no pun intended) from my previous post above and the column/hub/steering wheel refresh, today I had a little time before work and wanted to take the car for a short ride with the newly reinstalled parts. Pulled the car out of the garage and let it warm up for 5 min before it just died. Turned over but couldn’t get it to fire. Checked for and confirmed spark so next is gas. Poured a little down the vent tube and primaries and it fired right up, ran for 30 seconds or less and died.  Not getting fuel. Gauge says half but years ago it got stuck at half when it was really empty. I tried putting what little gas I had in the tank but it may not have been enough to reach the pickup.

I pulled the rubber hose from the tank to the pump and before adding gas I got a dribble then nothing. After adding the couple gallons I had (2 if that) I got a dribble but that was it and no fire. So either I’m not reaching the pickup yet or the sick came apart and or I have a clog in the line. Probably won’t have time to mess with it till Sunday night but we’ll see. Glad it happened in my driveway in front of the garage so all I had to do was push it back in rather than during my ride today befor work or somewhere on my 2+ hour trip mentioned above!

Seems to be so far I think. I got the tank dropped today. Plenty of fuel in it. The sock looks to have been replaced at some point but it did break apart. I’m hoping there is just some trash in the line from that. Tank is clean inside otherwise.  My daughter woke up from her nap so I’m done with the car for today now but I plan to blow some air through the feed line tomorrow and see what happens. The rubber hose at the tank was pretty crusty so maybe I’ll be lucky and there is a crack I didn’t see and it was sucking air. Might try to run a rubber hose from the pump to small fuel tank to make sure it’s pulling fuel like it should. Maybe I should’ve started there lol

EDIT: Fuel pump is bad. Easy fix

Too bad you dropped the tank first.  Oh well, now you can replace sock now.

Yea, I did replace the sock. Also wanted to determine the source of a knocking that comes from the tank when the fuel level gets around half or so. Seems to be a baffle of some sort that the pickup rests in. Not sure if it was supposed to be attached somewhere but I couldn’t determine where. Inside is clean though and pulling the tank wasn’t hard. Probably spring for a new one down the road eventually.

Well today I had a fight with the radial arm saw!!

I would call it a draw as I didn't lose my thumb, or even needed stitches, much to my surprise!!

several steri strips and some gauze and I was on my way!!

OF course, I was doing dumb Sh** and thought my thumb was out of the way when it wasn't.

anyway... don't get too comfortable with power tools!!

What was the dumb sh** you ask?

Well...........................................................................................cutting tread into my very old, worn out crocs!!
