79 T/A with open rear?
« on: January 13, 2021, 05:40:27 PM »
Hi.  Ive owned my 79 since the early 90s.  Bought it has a basket case cheap.  It is a correct 301 code W with auto trans.  Just recently I was curious what rear end ratio I have.  The rear tube is stamped "2PJ" which i believe is a 2.41 open rear.  Somebody school me here...  I thought 1979 Trans Ams all had posi rear.  And the rear end option for a 301 was 2.73 with auto and 3.08 with 4 speed?

I doubt I am any help but my 79 301 TA with an auto is a 2.73. I bought it 25 years ago from the original owner.

Here's what I found on another site.  Drill down towards the bottom of the page.

Hmmmm, all Trans Ams had posi standard up until 1981, possible diff has been swapped. I have a theory that it was originally a WS6 rear disc car and someone had taken that diff and swapped in a junkier one.

That list was incomplete years ago, glad to see Brett used the extra information provided to not update a thing.

I dont think that site has been updated for years. I bought my decals for the 77 from him, at the time he was the cheapest around for PG, I may be wrong but I dont think theres any business there now.  I think I got my service manuals as well.

Yeah, there's not much happening over there. That was my T/A home years and years ago and when I got back into things, it was like going back to your old abandoned home. Felt recognizable but eerie and uncomfortable as there was nobody around. There's a few us that go on there and reply to messages and what not but TAC is definitely home now and I'm thankful for finding it but this has absolutely no relation to the original post and my apologies for hijacking it!!

Rear end - Possible swap from the P.O. who were likely driving the heck out it and destroyed the original. Had that one cheap...put it in...really hard to say but if you were able to locate the build sheet it will say on there what came with the car from factory and this mystery would be solved!!

let us know as it is curious!

When I bought my T/A it was pretty much a rolling shell.  I bought it that way on purpose because I wanted to put it all together myself.   I've had to replace alot of parts that were either missing or in bad shape.

Somebody before had picked and swapped some things from it prior to me.  The tail lights were non t/a the hood was a different color and bird.  Interior was empty except for a busted dash and back seat.  A junk 350 chevy sat in the bay wasn't bolted in.  No tranny.

I never found a build sheet.  If the rear was originally a disc brake rear, someone must have swapped the emergency brake cable too.  I think those are different at where they meet the brakes?  Maybe not.

The vin shows it to be a code w.  I was able to find a 79 code W 301 with less than 70k from a wrecked formula just down the road from me in 1995.

Cowl tag says the car is supposed to be Nocturnal blue.

My plans are to restore/rebuild the car the way I want it.   Eventually I'll come across a different rear for it.

Sounds like a good idea.

Nocturne Blue is one of my favorite colours on these cars; Are you going to keep it that way?

given you're building what you want, is the plan to find a rearend with 308 or 342 gearing?

I can confirm the 2.73 and the 3.08.  There might have been some 2.41's but I don't really know. In any case, you don't want one, and positrac was definitely standard equipment.

Thanks for the confirm on the gearing.

Originally my T/A had (i belive) deluxe light blue interior, at least that was the color-style of the dash and back seat that was in it.  In the 90s i started completing the rest of the interior but had trouble matching up the blue.  I eventually went with black deluxe and was not really a fan of the blue anyway.  There are several dents in the hard top roof know idea why.  I have a ttop roof i plan to swap it with.

Right now i have 350 turbo trans.  But i have a 2004r  tranny that i would like to use and put a 3.08 or 3.23 rear end in.

I had a 400 out of a 78 trans am for it back in the 90s but that came up missing one day at a "friends" garage.

I have manual windows, but ive been reading about the power window kits and the relay mods.  I would like to go that route.

It used to have 15x8 snowflakes.   One was lighter than the other 3.  The lighter one was stamped Canada

Nocturnal blue is nice but ive always wanted that black with gold birds.  I know its not original but thats why i bought my car as a builder.  I like to imagine its 1979 and im at the dealership ordering it the way i want.

I'd suggest closer to 3:42 or 3:73 or be a dog on the highway if even able to lockup. Maybe others with a 301 and OD can suggest what works for them. Sounds like you will possibly be after a new rear end anyway, or new centre to drop in. Be aware that many aftermarket LSD centres are designed to work with the original non-LSD/open rear, so another option if that's all that's nearby.

My 79 came with a 2.41 limited slip - original 403 car.  I cannot imagine what a mutt a loaded TA with 301 and 2.41 would be...

With tHE 301, 350 turbo tran, and 2.41 rear... my car has nothing in the way of "performance" lol.  It cruises really well at highway speeds.  Decent gas mileage.

Yeah and I think that was the goal they were after...20 mpg out of a V8 Pontiac, economical but still a V8...or so the brochure might've said!!

This is totally an aside, but when we were parting out cars, we picked up a couple of 1980 301 cars with Electronic Spark Control deleted.  In 1980, the base Trans Am engine, which only had like 155 hp, could be deleted.  I recall these cars had 2.41 axles.  It's been a  long time, though.  I am getting to where I can't remember all the details.
