Custom Full Leather Trans am Interior
« on: September 09, 2020, 10:52:50 PM »
Check this out. This shop, Frank's Hot Rods in Temecula CA, does beautiful interior work. They put a full leather interior into this 1979 Trans Am - not just seat covers, but door panels, the plastic trim panels, almost everything. I asked them what an interior like that would cost, and they told me "about $15,000"  I wouldn't pay that for an interior on this car, but it's stunning.

But it does give me some ideas. There are some places you can buy leather seats for our cars in the original patterns: https://www.lseat.com/products/1978-1981-pontiac-firebird-custom-real-leather-seat-covers-front.html. The rest is relatively simple pattern making and sewing - for example, for the rear arm rest panels, you'd make a pattern out of paper, transfer that to muslin, sew it together, make it fit, then take it apart, use it to mark and cut the leather, sew that together and then glue it to the panels .

I might just give that a try. After I finish everything else. ;)

Beautiful work, no it's not cheap. I bought my car with the interior already mostly trimmed in leather, it was one of the selling points. But it would have been even better if done exactly in the original style, not easy especially with the doors and the chrome mylar. I've corrected and improved several areas and still quite expensive. Mine also included the dash and console and various trim items, but this car in black was able to get away with not doing these and still works well.
I bet it will smell nice once freshly treated to mink conditioner. Looks like they used a set of A-body seatbelt stalks.
