Picked up a car/parts I've been chasing since 2008
« on: July 31, 2020, 03:11:25 PM »
I've been working towards this car for quite a long time. It's been the reason I've been unloading cars here and there.

My Dad bought a VHS of Corvette Summer after telling me how cool the car was in the movie. I instantly knew I wanted to own that car someday. Fast forward to 2008, and the body parts were being offered for sale, but being in school meant buying them was out of the question.

About a year ago I was linked to a thread on another forum, where to my surprise I saw all the pieces to build the car. The body parts, wheels, Moonroof tops, lights, everything. I knew I had to have it. Fast forward to almost a year to the day later, and I was driving 950 miles down to Tennessee.

Over the course of 48 hours, I've driven 1900+ miles thru 9 states each way, and I'm now the proud owner of the Corvette Summer movie car (parts)!

I can make a build thread here if you guys want to follow along.

Basically I'm just keeping the doors off the car. Everything else is being replaced.

I'd love to take it to Foxboro!

That’s very cool.  Just trying to understand.  You got a 70something corvette and fiberglass parts molded to replicate the Corvette Summer car so you can build a replica.  Or is this an actual movie car?  My understanding is the movie car was RHD.  Is this one RHD?

The body parts I have were molded off the original movie car. The movie car was RHD, but I'll be leaving this one LHD.

Believe it or not, the Corvette Summer actual car has been sitting down here in Australia for decades, sat in a used car lot for ages! I think now a collector has it and may try to restore it.

Very nice! What do you have in mind for the drivetrain? Unless I missed it...

Thanks for the kind words guys!

I've read about that car. I'm glad it's in the hands of someone who will appreciate and take care of it.

It has the original 350, but it's been rebuilt with forged internals, flat top pistons, mild cam with solid lifters, and a decent set of GM iron heads. Initially I was gonna throw an LQ9 in it, but it runs so good I don't think I can bring myself to remove it.

Nice!   Going with the move metal flake paint the huge corvette logo on the tail panel?  I’ll be following your build thread and hope to see it in person.  I’m up for a ride north to your sea shore.

I'm definitely going big on the flake. I'm talking the size of a dime

I mocked up the tail lights yesterday. I couldn't help myself.

I had to go back and look at the trailer and read a bit about the car. The headlights sound like off the shelf, but the orange running lights on the 'beak' look tricky. I would love to hear about what you do with the details. Also, it said the car was right hand drive so the driver (Luke Skywalker-sorry I couldnt resist) could reach out to the girls on the sidewalk. Now thats CRAZY!!!

I was strongly considering converting it to RHD, but I think it's for the best if I leave it alone. The visibility on this car wont be the best, and I didn't want to throw another challenge on top of it.

Sounds like a wise decision. I think I read they used a couple of gears and a chain for the steering!

Congratulations,
I am also a member of the Corvette forum( as not to keep all my eggs in one basket) , and saw those parts for sale. Corvette Summer, like SATB is like a Cult movie for me although I never was driven to get one( Corvette) - until one " fell " in my lap.  This is for you ( you've probably see it,) lol, good luck with the build!

Yeah, the original setup was a certified death trap. If I was gonna convert it I would use a steering box from something like a RHD Cherokee.
