Buckeneer or Other Red Exterior Paint?
« on: June 28, 2020, 06:33:45 PM »
Looking to paint my car in a few months. Although I love Buckeneer Red I don't like the orange flare up in direct sunlight. Have others tried another red paint for your red birds?

I have not used red, but you better sit down when you order it! I understand that red paint of any kind is expensive!! If youre not stuck on authenticity, pic out a red car you see on the street that you like and use that code.

The Dodge red for my 2012 RAM was $1500 a quart! That didn't include reducer or clear and I get a discount at my paint store...

Red IS expensive. This is GM Bright Red. My mom had a new 91 Cutlass when I painted the bird and I liked the color so that's what I went with.

I was just in the auto paint store a few days ago and noticed a fender they have hanging on the wall that is painted the same color code but with different brands in various sections on the fender.  It's amazing how much difference there was between the different brand paints even though they are supposed to be all the same color.  So my recommendation is that whatever color you choose, be sure to get a sample from the specific brand you plan to use and see if you really like it.

I guess the other thing to consider is decals and hood bird, they might look weird on other red color.

Thank you, I was considering Viper Red or Torrid Red (2006 GTO red). I may need to get some samples.

Good Point - my painter uses PPG so I'll need to get some samples first.

Thanks for all the replies. I do want the decals/bird to look good with the paint. Buccaneer Red it nice and bright, but has that orange flare up so I'll need to test some samples. Thank you for your comments.

I think any red that's going to be bright is going to have some orangyness to it.

I'm 2 weeks out from final paint and going through this exact process of "what color". Over the last three years of the restoration I've been planning on Buchaneer Red even though not really having seen the color in person (at least on a completely assembled car). Looking at TA photos online in the Buchaneer Red color, I do like the color scheme a lot but also know that online photos can sometimes be deceptive as to the actual true color. I also think the orange in the hood bird complements the "orange-ish" tint in the Buchaneer Red.

I had my paint shop shoot a couple samples which I just picked up today, one with Buchaneer Red and another with a more modern GM Torch Red which I have seen up close and really like. Side by side the Torch Red wins out as a nicer red in my opinion.  In fact it makes the Buchaneer Red look kind of washed out. But when I compare the Buchaneer Red to online photos, it's actually pretty close to what I see on the screen which I can't find any fault in. So at this point I'm thinking of going with Buchaneer Red.

One other consideration for me is that I already purchased the molded-in color welting in Buchaneer Red.  The good part is it's a very good match. This saves me from having to deal with painted welting if I were to go with another color.

I bought mine off eBay a couple years ago, unfortunately there are no active listings for this stuff anymore on eBay.

Here's the company that was selling it http://www.citationindustries.com/ although the only purchase link on their site goes to an outdated eBay listing.
There is an email address that you can try to see if they still are manufacturing it.

He is Wizard61 on the PY forum, I got some of the red welting from him too but that was at least a year ago. I think he still posts on PY forum.

I know the person he's talking about, "wizard61" on Performance Years. Here is the thread on the PY forum where he started telling people about his welting. I've bought some from him myself and it's good. So, you should be able to get his contact info there and read a bit about the welting. It's 18 pages  :) . Here's the link to the thread:  http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=787665
