Need Help Selecting a Cam for a 455
« on: April 29, 2020, 07:39:56 AM »
Hi everyone!  I am new to this forum and this is my first post and new to the hot rod scene so I am a rookie!  LOL

Just picked up a 68 Firebird with a 76 Trans Am 455 block that came with a 4x 1H head, Holley Avenger 670cfm and a Edelbrock Performance Pontiac intake.  I will be replacing the existing 4x 1H head with a 6x8 head that I just picked up. The Firebird will be used as a street cruiser.

What cam would you recommend?  I called Comp Cams and I got 2 answers.  1 person said go with the XE274 and the other person told me to go with the XE268.

I don't want a high idling cam, looking for something mild that will add power/torque.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Appologies for the late reply....

I'd recommend a Summit Racing SUM-2801 cam for your application. Its a popular choice for people wanting a roughly equivalent cam to the factory Ram Air III or H.O. cam.

in a 455 a "mild" cam would be the historic "041" RAIV cam the 268 is a bit "small"...but would perform well.
What kind of compression since youre swapping heads, any converter? (maybe  a 1800- 2200) gears?
