Basic painting question
« on: March 15, 2020, 05:44:45 PM »
I’ve got this cross hatch / X on my roof near the rear window.  To get this fixed would it require re-painting the entire roof, pillars and rear quarter panels?  Do I need to remove both front and rear glass as well before starting the job?

Not really a question for the internet. You really need an experienced person to look at the car in person.

Fixed the pic in the original post.  Given the virus craziness it's going to be a little while til I have a chance to get over to the body shop.  My trust in body shops isn't that strong to begin with either. Hence I thought I'd just check here first.   Thank you

It'll vary depending on what is on the car.  You can always blend it, but it may not look good.  There's no breaks in the body as you say, but it's hard to see the roof, so there is some advantage to blending it on the roof itself.  I mean in the absence of any other good options.

Can't tell what it is. Is it a scratch? If it's not too deep and there's enough paint there, it can be sanded with some ultra-fine wet paper and buffed out.

It's not your run of the mill scratch.  I'd describe it as like someone has taken an X-acto knife to the roof and drew an X into the roof.  It's very deep.

Thanks guys for your help.

Is it filler cracking? If so you may have a bigger problem ahead of you.

Is it a possibility of there being a screw that is too long pressing the surface from underneath?

Thanks guys.  I tried to buff it out today to see if it would do more damage to it and good news is it didn’t.  It’s a bit of an optical illusion- it’s a dent underneath the X.  I thought it was yet another paint flaw but I don’t think it’s the case this time.

Will be heading to the paint shop sometime between now and the end of the year :(
SF Bay Area just ordered a shelter in place so I’m guessing my body shop is closed for a while.
