2020 Nats- CANCELLED June 7, 2020
« on: January 30, 2020, 01:51:31 PM »
I made my reservation nearly a month ago.  I saw there are only 16 rooms left at the host hotel as of today.  It’s shaping up to be a great year.  Who all is coming this year?  Have you made reservations yet?

I'll be there. I haven't yet decided which car I'll take. I made my reservation at the Holiday Inn back in late November/early December.

I'll be there this year too.  Got my entry sent in and staying at the Holiday Inn.  Now if I dont let the car get away from me and hit the DJ's car it will be a great weekend for me.

That year broke me of taking a jack to the Nationals! It just didn't seem worth it after "the incident".
Oh, and it's always a great weekend!!

Got my registration about a week ago.  We wont be attending this year unfortunately.  We will be attending the Pontiac, Ill. show in September so hopefully we'll see some of you there.  The Mrs and I have decided to do more seeing the country (National parks) traveling along with a big car show trip a year AND stay in a budget, so it's Pontiac Illinois this year and Nationals next.  We're working on being debt free, mortgage not included, within the next 4 or 5 years.  That way we can enjoy life a little more as we slowly age...............like a good cheese.............minus the smell lol.

We won’t make it this year either as my brother jumped the gun and got us hooked on a Buffalo hunt. Maybe 2021 but the wife wants to pick a vacation sooooooooo.

Tell her to pick a buffalo hunt for the next vacation.  See, you kill two birds with one stone.  Let me know how it works out, as I would never take my own advice.  That’s why I am still alive and married 35 years later.

Ok, for those who have never been to this.... What can you tell us about it. I hear folks go and it's a good show. I live in Toledo and it's not a far drive. I was thinking about driving the TA down if I get it finished or even partially finished.

What can I say?  Hundreds of cars of every model, in every condition.  Some of the finest people you’ll ever meet.  Strangers will hand you a bottle, or buy you dinner.  Acres and acres of cars, parking lot parties at night.  Tipp City cruise, where they hand the entire Main Street over to us on Saturday night.  Charity auctions and drawings for prizes.  Lots of money made to be donated to A-Special-Wish Foundation.  Excellent hosts who donate a week of their lives to put this show on.  And of course, the chance to meet me ( just seeing if anyone actually read this whole thing!)

I drove up from Louisville, KY two years ago with my daily. Dragged the wife with me. There were so many Firebirds/TAs it almost gets to the point of: whatever, another bird. Then you turn into the next row and WOW something sticks out. I can still see in my mind a white 79 TA with gold bird. Was the prettiest TA I have ever seen. It started raining so many people covered or closed the hood/windows/doors. It is worth it to go see. I did not do anything extra, just saw the birds, had lunch then drove back.
Drive it like it's a rental.

It'll be 10 bucks to see the Yetti, or you can buy the attraction for a half hour to talk to him. There's a movie quote in there someplace.

As of April 7, the Holiday Inn is temporarily closed.

”Effective April 7-July 7 the Holiday Inn, Fairborn will do a temporary suspension of service. The hotel is currently fully booked for the Nationals. The Nationals Committee continues to review the situation regarding the COVID 19 pandemic. At this time, we are still planning on proceeding with the show. If anything changes we will certainly post updates as needed.”

Well, I'm sure hoping we'll be coming out from under a rock in a few months.  I am sure it'll be a lot of hard work for the committee and the hotel (and everybody involved) even if everything recovers.

I guess you all heard about the homewood suites fire.  Holy cow, what a year.  They say it won't be repaired in time for the show.  There are a lot of other hotels about a mile away, so really not a big issue, but it sure was a nice place to stay.

From Scott yesterday:

”We were all surprised by the news of the April 21st fire at the Homewood Suites. We are told the damage was confined to the lobby area (no guest rooms affected), but the hotel will not be operational by late August. One of the many benefits of the area in which the show takes place is the large number of hotels nearby which can accommodate participants.
I talked to Jerry tonight and at this point, there are no plans to cancel or postpone this year’s show, but the planning process is also being held up by closures and furloughs at many of our suppliers, vendors and business partners. Our goal is to have a ‘20 T/A Nats, but with every precaution taken to reduce risks to participants, show and hotel staff. We appreciate the continued support and feedback from everyone, and will communicate any updates as the reopening process continues and we are able to make decisions regarding this years show.
Please take care and STAY SAFE!”

Personally, I now think it’s pretty optimistic that the show will actually happen, but maybe I will be wrong.  Won’t be the first time...

As sad as the decision to cancel is, it did make our decision about the 2020 show moot. That being that wife Peggy permanently lost her job due to the pandemic, along with our fears of being 60 some year olds among a large group of people, we  were leaning to missing our first Nats in 16 years. Tough times indeed.
