Mecum - Bullet mustang
« on: January 01, 2020, 10:49:33 AM »
OK, dont flame me for bringing up a mustang, but theres probably not many on here (including myself) that would not want to own this car. This thing has been all over the auction news and car world including a full article in the latest Hemmings. Question is.. How much do you think this will sell (if it hits reserve) for?
My guess is $1.5 - $2. mil. range.

Sorry, I can’t lie, I would want to own this car! :)  Definitely one of the coolest cars in Hollywood.

Not sure about the price...not idea where to begin there but, I would own it if it was inherited or something but as far as buying it, that would not happen. I like the odd Mustang as it is an old muscle car but my heart doesn't lie with it by any way shape or form.

If money was no object, I’d buy it and drive the hell out of it, just to tick off the collector snobs. :)

That's funny Jim, that car was a daily driver for many years by the family that is auctioning it off. The drive train has been rebuilt but the body has never been restored, so in all honesty theres not much wrong with your statement. There really is nothing that could be hurt (unless totaled in an accident of course) by driving that car. Cars are meant to be driven, not put on pedestals.

When I was 5 I went to the Ford dealer with my dad, he planned on buying a Country Squire station wagon , he had me , my 3 year old sister and my brother on the way, that was 1966.  After some time in dealer we drive out with a 66 Mustang Fastback, 289 4 speed in highland green, I thought it was coolest thing on earth and loved the feeling of the acceleration and the rumble of the exhaust.

When I saw Bullet a few years later the king of cool driving that badass car around SFO I was  floored ,still the best car chase scene ever , I would LOVE to have that car parked next to my TA

Bullet was cool, but I was never huge on the green. I always thought the Charger was cooler.

My favorite Mustang was Eleanor in the Gone In 60 Seconds remake. That car is absolutely beautiful from every angle.

When I was a kid, my friend's uncle had a 68 mustang GT fastback 4 speed he bought new. It was a neat guy and the car was the coolest car ever! He took us for a ride on the highway and cranked it up to 100 MPH. He never sold it and had it his entire life. I saw the car in a tent in his driveway. Last time a I talked to him he said he started restoring it. Sadly he died of a hart attack and I assume one of his kids took the car. Dano

My mom's car when I was growing up was a 68 Mustang with the 289.  Powder blue.  I keenly remember piling bricks into the trunk of it as my mom couldn't stop spinning out in it.  The weight balance of the car wasn't the greatest to say the least.

Unfortunately she sold it in the early 80s for $3200 with low miles on it.

Not sure why but the Mustang wasn't my classic car of choice when I purchased the T/A back in 2013.

Yea, I was never a mustang guy (I started my love for the firebird in 1969 when mom got a '67-400) but I do like the fast back models. My wifes first car was an '80 mustang and now she drives a new 'vert, so I have gone to the darkside with one sharing the garage with my T/A.

Too bad the Charger RT met it's demise, think of the interest it would've added to this story. I'm just glad the Mustang survived all these years.

Sounded like a decent price to me. Highest ever for a mustang. Not bad considering Rick Nielson paid over $200k for a guitar at the same auction!!

Being a GM guy I'd rather have the Corvette from "Corvette Summer" ! Ok maybe not  - one of my friends in High School had a 68 Fastback Manual Stang - navy blue ( I think he totaled it in college ) I rode in a few times. The " Bullet " car fits in with my " Patina" collection ( rarity aside) - I hope it stays "as is" - no worries about door dings! Love seeing these cars that were hidden away - cool!  And for your listening and viewing pleasure------https://youtu.be/BQx5V3LxL7E  :D

My first "cool" cars were Mustangs (69 fastback with 390 and 4 speed and then a 70 Mach 1 with 351C) so I'll always have a soft spot for them.  That said, this meme showed up in my Instagram... almost too true to be funny:

Back in the late 70’s I had friends with Mustangs, some very rusty 65-68s and a few really nice ones. The nicest one was a 68Shelby GT500 fast back and the next nicest was a very well optioned 66GT convertible. These two cars I would love to own if I had the funds and storage space.

While I understand why the Bullet Mustang is worth what it sold for, I could not justify buying it myself even if I had so much money that I could and not blink. For me it is not as nice a car as the Shelby one of my friends use to own and could likely be repurchased for well under 200,000. The 66 vert is still own by another friend and is likely worth about what my TA is. I’m too practical to pay for movie provenance and the bullet Mustang is not a nice enough version of what a Mustang can be for me to really want it.

I could see cloning it, but with upgrades to turn it into something nice to drive?

That was the close-up car that sold.  The pursuit car was supposed to be crushed, but somehow survived and was recently found in a junkyard.  That car is being restored.  Go figure.

From what I understand there were 2 mustangs, the one that just sold was indeed the 'hero' car or the one used in the closeup shots. The car that did the stunts was pretty much trashed, it was found a few years ago in a junkyard in Mexico. Last I read, it was being restored. If the owner was smart they would put in overtime to get that thing ready for the next big auction. Also, makes me wonder what the trans am that McQueen used in his last movie would sell for. It was recently discovered on a farm in Nebraska I believe. No way it will bring bullet money but again, if I owned that car I would strike while the irons hot.
