Best type of flare welting.
« on: November 06, 2019, 06:49:35 AM »
I'm sure there is a thread somewhere on here about this but I couldn't find it...

Anyone have experience with a brand welting that is closest to original? Fbody Warehouse has OER (Gray) and a "High quality" (black) one. NPD has a grey one that looks like OER. AMES again sells grey by the foot...

Anyone have experience with any of these?

Talk to Wizard61 over on PY. His name is James.
You can't beat the welting he created, or his prices.
Don't even bother looking anywhere else.

I used stuff from Ames on my 77. I had to paint it and it has held up very well. I was getting ready to order more for my current project and lo and behold I found enough left over from then to do what I need.  There was a tip on here to attach it to a thin stick to keep it straight to paint which I did and it worked out great. Did not have any problem with paint sticking to it even after bending it around the spoiler. With all of that said the pre coloured stuff seems like a great idea.

Below is a link to the thread over at Performance Years about Wizard61's welting. I bought some black welting from him a couple years ago and it's nice quality like the above poster said. He was easy to work with and sold me the number of feet I wanted for a reasonable price. Costs more than the other places' molding, but his is better. Here's the link. You can find contact info there. Hopefully he is still selling it. He was making it in several colors, like black, white, red, blue, so if your car is a color he has, you didn't have to paint it. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=787665

Ok, so it costs $100 (including shipping) for the body color welting.

I think in am going to try and just paint the gray stuff.  I have to get some flex additive anyway for the rear bumper.

I will get the $25 stuff from NPD when I pick up my windshield and rear window.

If that doesn't work well, then I will get the $100 Stuff.

Looks like his price went up about 25% from what I remember. Did he mention what colors are available now? Thanks.

I have worked with all the types currently available and highly recommend spending the extra loot for the product James has made. It matches the original shape better, doesn't come "kinked" like the grey stuff, and holds modern urethane paints well with no need for flex agent. It has held up very well in my durability testing of temperature and UV extremes over almost 3 years now both painted and as molded color. MUCH, MUCH, better than the other brands!  If you paint it (or just clear it to get a gloss match) follow the instructions I put up starting on page 14 of the PY thread.

No, he didn't mention what colors were left. I actually ordered the less expensive OER product from FBodystore for $20 and free shipping. (A new to me vendor)  For $20 I'll give it a shot even if I end up buying the higher quality later. Thanks for chiming in John!

Kinda hard to get a pic of it in place. But this is how it has held up on my black car. Several years and it is still fine. I have nothing against the pre coloured stuff, but it wasn't around when I did the black car. I have no problem using this stuff again though as it has worked out fine.

Im pretty sure I did not use any kind of additional flex agent in the paint. I talked with the supplier and they told me that with most cars having a lot plastic now adays that is already added to the paint. I cant remember now, but I would imagine I put single stage on this part.

Here is a cut a way shot of the original and the $20 stuff.

Pretty darn close.  The stuff I got from Fbody store wasn't kinked or twisted bad. I just laid it on the floor for a day and it was fine.

That looks like the stuff I have. I found mine all rolled up in the bottom of my toolbox! I have had it laid out for a couple of weeks now to let it get straight. Hardest part is getting it to bend at the top corners where the original stuff was stapled. I back cut it and used a little extra 3m glue held in place with some tape overnight.

I body-worked/Fit mine to the body, and eliminated the welting all together.  Much nicer/cleaner/modern look IMO.

The welting is only there to hide the poor fits
