1979 W72 PWH engine block date code?
« on: October 27, 2019, 01:01:30 AM »
Hey gang,

Thought this was a bit weird, the date code on my PWH coded '79 XX cast 400 motor has a date code that reads K037. Now i'm sure that translates to the 3rd of November, 1977. Is that correct? I know all 400's in '79 were leftovers from 1978, but isn't that still a bit too early? Could just be a very rough K039 but that would mean it was made at the end of 1979 when they were discontinuned which doesn't make sense either. What do you guys think?

They’re all ‘77 castings.  That’s when the casting stopped....for the 78-79 models

I just read that the block machining ended in July ‘78.  Basically castings ended late November ‘77 and machining ended in July ‘78

Jeez, motor made two years before the car was even built. They must have really made a lot. Thanks for hiding a few motors Pontiac!

They were casted and then machined in ‘78.

Add in assembly time, building and delivering the car.

Logistics and production....

Sorry to hijack, but there has been a series in the last few issues of smoke signals written by a guy that worked at Pontiac in the engine plant. Last issue was about the last Pontiac v8.
