79 Fire Am build
« on: October 10, 2019, 04:28:06 PM »
I thought I would start a build thread on my 79 Formula / Fire Am project.
I've owned this car for 20 years now, 3rd owner, it's a 79  Nocturne blue WS6 Formula 400 4 spd non A/C car, Deluxe black interior, W50 package, rear spoiler.

Unfortunately it was in a crash when I first got it, not knowing exactly what I had it was painted red and turned into a Trans Am. Fast forward 19 years, now knowing what it is last year my wife and I toke it apart and started a basic resto with a twist, the car already had a couple items from Herb Adams VSE on it when I got it.
The decision was made to do a period correct resto mod, I already had a Hooker show bar and some Recaro seats so I started searching for more original VSE parts, (not the new ones available now) took a while but now have front and rear VSE sway bars, front VSE moded leaf spring bracket, structure kit, I will be putting on 255/60-15 tires on the stock WS6 wheels.

The one item that pains me to not be able to reuse are the HO Tri-y headers, they are just in too bad a shape so a set of RARE manifolds are being used.
The engine is the original W72 400 , bored .040" forged rods, ported original 6X-4 heads and a mild cam with 1.65 rockers, the carb is a warmed over Cliff Ruggles built Q-jet.

255/60 is definitely the period correct setup!

Glad to see this car making it's way onto the forum.

Keep us updated on your other one too....

I installed our 1LE set of coil springs and leaf springs (yes deviated from what Herb advocated) solid steel and Delrin bushings (similar to the VSE Nylon bushings) I did use modern tall upper ball joints, back in those days the upper A-arm mount would be cut and relocated to achieve the same thing.

Nice. That color is great in the sunlight.  Looks like a great job on the paint.

On a side note, how does that green tape treat you? I always go back to my original 3m 2050 tape. I just have to pull it within a day or two I don't leave residue.

on the glass it seems fine but than again I've had it not stick, all the different taps drive me nuts LOL and yes I've had residue issues.

Oh that's what you were doing when you were looking that the two tone for the Formula lettering ????????????

I plan on doing the same thing, but instead of it saying Formula I'm going to have it say Fire Am.

400/4-Speed T-Top Formula! Very nifty options there!

Now about those Delrin bushings, do they better the rigidity of the car over the VSE-spec ones? I have the original bushings and the NPD repros but I'm open to more improvements.

Ya, that's why I just stick to the old faithful... I can't seem to find one that sticks well but releases without residue.  The 3m 2050 is the one that sticks for me but I have to get it off in a day or so or it's there...

Anyway,  it's great to see the pictures and progress of your car. Thanks for sharing!

I have not seen that NPD has the repro A-arm bushings bushings. I sell Delrin/steel lower bushings and steel upper bushings with Delrin thrust washers, I would not say they are any better than the original VSE.

late evening started to re-assemble the interior, fitting the side panels to the Hooker show bar is a pain but got it done installed the rear seat, new speakers and auto carpet on the package tray, the headliner was done in the same material that modern cars are done in.
Cleaned up the Recaro seats, they will go in next.

they did not come with Recaro seats, I'm building a period correct resto mod car, I was lucky to find seats that matched the car and were the same style as Pontiac used in the Recaro edition T/As so it looks as if it could be factory

With the matching piping no one would suspect they're not original.
