Rear end numbers?
« on: August 18, 2019, 02:52:46 PM »
Need some help...on my 69 TA I have the following numbers on the drivers side pumpkin:
G201 or 207, hard to read, then below that I have 67890, 1234. I have yet to find the two letter code on the axle tube!
Do any of these numbers mean anything?

69 Firebirds used a Pontiac axle, very well made, and available in an amazing array of internals.  There may be some people come in here in a minute and try to decode that as a Chevrolet axle.  It's nothing like a Camaro axle.  I apologize if you already know all this.

The cast in numbers were fixed on the casting bucks permanently and basically that's a part number and usually a date.  It tells you what they cast when you are looking around for it in the foundry.  Stamped numbers mean somebody went to extra trouble to identify that axle (stamping is extra work).  Decoders that I have seen focus on two letter codes that were stamped on the left axle tube rear.  Kinda like a Chevrolet, which were stamped totally opposite on the right side front.

All these codes might be used to determine if the axle is original.  I'll be darned if I can see a casting date code in all that. 6789 and 1234 look like Mel Brooks's luggage combinations to me.

I don't have any 1960's axles around the house any more, so I can't compare.

No need to apologize, thanks for responding! I like the ref to Mel Brooks..I suspected those numbers didnt mean anything but if I am guessing the G207 is the date code. July 20 1967??

I too have always been told that the two letter code stamped into the axle tube was what everyone looked for. So far I cannot find one but I will need to do more cleaning and scraping to make sure its not really there.

Thanks again!
