Who's running a 301 in their setup?
« on: July 18, 2019, 05:15:03 PM »
As the subject states...who is still running a 301 in their cars?

Modified or not?

if modified, what did you do to you build.

I'm just getting ideas for mine

I have an 80 SE with original 301. Looks to be 108K miles.
Drive it like it's a rental.

1979 Formula. Must have better gears than what my 301 trans am (273) has. Small cam of some sort. You could hear the difference between cars. 30 over. I got the car this way so I really don't know much about it but it was much faster and better sounding then the matching Trans am that I have owned for ever.

79 Formula 301 (Work in progress)
67 RS Camaro (Work in progress)
See the recurring theme???

The 301 makes V8 sounds and moves the car, don't expect much more.  The 301 Trans Am my brother had was a total dog, but if you're just cruising around and driving responsibly it does that just perfectly fine.

I'll have to do a test someday rotate the tires and count the driveshaft revolutions to see what the gear ratio is on my Formula.  I have the Pontiac history papers on it, so I'll see what thos say. But it seemed much quicker than my TA, it is a one wheel peeler but it can smoke them with no problem. Yes I know that doesn't mean much but my TA would just mumble something and just mosey away when you stomped on the gas. It's really not that bad of an engine.  I always wanted to put headers on one (which can be done) and add throttle body injection. My other thought was build my own intake with fuel injectors and use either an LT1 or tune port upper intake and ecm to see what it would do.

When my brother had one we researched into what you could do with them and there was something about you were limited on how much power you could get out of them before they'd break apart.  Maybe the 301 turbo variants don't have that issue?  Honestly if you want a small displacement domestic V8 with any considerable amount of power Ford is the way to go, heh put a Ford V8 into a GM for once.

OMG...I almost spit out my Guinness when I read this!!

I know there's plenty of 301 setups out there...lots to be discovered at 301 garage, and I was just curious.

For anyone really serious about making some decent street power, with a non-turbo 301, you need to start with a 301T block & crank. I think most all '80-'81 301's had the 301T block. But only the turbo engines came with the stronger crank. From what I've read, that non-turbo crank would be the weakest link. Besides the weak crank, I think the main reason so few build up 301's is because there are no aftermarket heads or intakes for 'em.

Billy Nees was #7 Stock qualifier at the div 1 race this weekend. He ran a 12.837, with his non-turbo 301 '79 Lemans. The car has been racing now for several years. It must run a stock intake and an 800cfm Q-jet.

Since the 301 is down on torque & horsepower, more rear end gear is needed, to increase acceleration. If the car has an auto trans, a stall converter will also help. But, since there are still a few 350's & 400's out there, very few guys build up a 301. Most of the 301's are just run 'til they quit, and are junked, I assume.

The guys who do hot rod or race 301's are always lookin for cheap 301T parts. Like all decent Pontiac parts, they are getting harder to find. So, for anyone SERIOUSLY considering building a hopped up 301, I strongly advise that you collect several 301T engines FIRST, especially turbo shortblocks.

Awesome stuff...thank you

I have bern re-reading a lot of posts over  at 301 Garage and like always, I'm flooded with options and ideas!!

Hard to make a decision...I know that in the short term, my 301 thats in it will be taking on the job of running around and I'm going to try and just get it running and see how that goes.
