Stylized 1978-1980 Hoodbird Concept - thoughts?
« on: July 20, 2019, 09:11:27 PM »
Hey everyone!

Been a longtime lurker here, plan on finally getting another Trans Am in a few years after my unfortunate acquisition of one back in 2008. Got a 2011 Camaro in September of 2010 that I recently sold after almost 9 years of ownership since I have to return to school due to a career path change.

Anyway, I want a black 1979 hardtop; final product to have the red/orange graphics package and carmine interior, but when the time comes I'll take anything as long as it's a black hardtop and just convert it to my preferred trim colors.

Eventually getting one after I finish nursing school is one of my biggest motivators to keep on, and I'm already thinking of mods.

Gonna go for a pro-touring look with it, and I also want a custom hoodbird. Custom enough to differentiate it from stock, but not so custom that people KNOW that it's custom. My idea here was to sort of come up with a 1978(y88)/79-1980 style equivalent to the BRE hoodbird.

Let me know what you think:

About the concept:

- It's 10th Anniversary Trans Am size, as you can see by the hood line marks. The wings extend onto the fenders like the TATA. I figured oversizing it is one way to give it that extra pizazz. It's a lot harder to stylize the 1979-1980 Hoodbird than it is the 1973-1978 style, since one of the defining features of it are all of the various colors in the design, which you need to maintain as to not compromise its identity.
- Shaker is included in the design for dimensional reference. The dark gray at the top is meant to represent the bare painted hood.
- All of the pitch black "flames" and "tendrils" you see would be flat/satin black, similar to the "flames" of the BRE hood bird decal.
- The shaker scoop will be painted flat/satin black to match
- As you can also see, I recolored a couple of the "feathers" on the bird itself with the matte/satin black to sort of trickle the blackout into the hoodbird itself, or else the blackout would not look as integrated, and also vice versa by trickling the hoodbird colors into the matte black area.
- The decal would all be three pieces like the TATA decal, with transparent smooth bordering just like factory - lord knows if you cut the decal down to the edges of the design itself, you're asking for lifting with all those sharp points.

I wanted to keep it relatively simple, and I for one love the design and think it would look great on a black car. Best part is, it can be easily recolored into any of the stock 1979 color schemes. The trouble is, finding a company that has the vector for the 1979 TATA hoodbird that would be willing to create this design for me. Any ideas?

Thanks for looking!

I like it. It's not too over the top. I think most people wouldn't really notice the difference, but the ones that know what they're looking at will really know what's going on.

I am not typically one to like custom hood birds, but you pulled it off.   Looks great.   The only thing I have is the on the inner edge of the shaker opening, looks like there is a dimple in and out.   May want to straighten that out for a consistent edge.

Thanks, guys. Now I just got to find somebody who will design it onto a scale size .PDF and print the darn thing.

I like it but if it were me I'd make the crimson red colour a little brighter and perhaps more orangeish in order to make it more complimentary to the rest of the colours in the palette, as of now it's a pretty stark contrast and forces your focus either on the body or the head.  That's just me though as I don't like stark contrasts which is what I don't like about the '79-81 phoenix, gives it too much of a bald eagle vibe.

I like it, and only serious TA fans will really notice that it is custom.
Drive it like it's a rental.

Who ever you get to make this will know how to create the size they need. It is common to vector an image so that it can be resized so maybe they will do the same with this file. I am just learning all this recently as I get better at using photoshop. Still have way lots to learn. I think I've seen a 5 year old maneuvering it faster than me!

It looks good but I'm not a fan of the late style birds and prefer the earlier hood birds.
