1981 301T engine - anything worth saving?
« on: July 11, 2019, 04:48:39 AM »
Hi all,

I will be pulling the 301 engine out of my 1981 turbo trans am shortly in favor of an ls1.

I don't have too much room to store the engine and from what I have read it is not too desirable in terms of resale. I was wondering if there are any parts off the engine that I should pull of before scrapping it?
Or would it be worth it to try to keep the entire engine in storage?

Thanks for the help.

Not much can be used on any other engine. That is one of the 301s downfalls. Wish I was close to you or I'd buy it from you. I always wanted a turbo 301 so I could add EFI to it for my Formula.  I LS swapped my other car a 301 Trans Am. I did keep that 301 as well. I keep everything so I'm not one who should give you advice on keeping it...

Im about like Form, i tend to keep too much stuff. In fact my neighbor has 5 or 6 motors that she is about to get rid of that I need to convince myself to let someone else take them. That being said, have you heard about the '301 garage' forum. There is more than likely someone there that would take that motor off your hands.

There are a few Stock Eliminator drag guys who probably buy all the 301T stuff they can find, for a reasonable price. They especially want the 301T blocks & cranks.

I only know of 2 guys currently racing a 301. One is a Turbo Bird, owned by Rick Unterseh.

Here are a few threads he started at 301garage.com.

The other is a non-turbo '79 Lemans, owned by Billy Nees.

Since I'm a long time Pontiac drag racer, if I had any 301T stuff, I'd give the 301 racers the first chance to buy it.

I'd be interested in it. Now everybody is starting to look for them again, I think they're starting to come back into collectable status since most have been thrown away.

I wouldn't be quick to generally say everybody is looking for these engines.  Like yourself, I'd say more people are chasing down LS-based engines so they can LS swaps these days.  You can collect it but make sure you know that the computer parts are why these engines are hard to upgrade and resale value not being the best.  If you're not aware, be aware that the '81 301 has computer controls in place on the distributor timing and carburetor metering.  There's some tuning you can do on these engines but you really need to know what you're doing.  On a positive note, TTA Performance does a good job with the turbo engines but he's been using aftermarket efi as of late.  '80 301 Turbo did not have the features implemented on the '81 Turbo cars so those are a different beast as well.

I hope this helps,

Jon

Ok not everyone, but I have met a very good handful of people who bought '80-'81 T/A's and have been really looking to find a 301 Turbo set up. For example, there's a guy I met down here who bought a 301 Turbo car all complete and numbers matching. He asked me if I wanted the original engine for free with all the turbo stuff and I said no because I didn't know what to do with it. He took it to a yard or something to get rid of, and just this year he has been scrambling around trying to find it went. There's a '80 Turbo SE up near my mates neck of the woods in the US. Came with a 350 chev, his friend bought it, immediately started looking for a 301T. LS engines are widely available and have zero collectable value. I think that now more information about the 301T is being spread out and more people are not immediately calling it a garbage engine, it can make a resurgence.

Thanks for the input so far. I guess there is some interest in this engine still, even if it is minor. I still have a little time before the engine gets pulled so I will see what happens. I'm the type to not want to toss anything either, so I may just end up getting a cheap engine stand and tucking it away in the corner for the time being.
