Rebuild or replace Quadrajet (non-original 70 RAIII)
« on: June 11, 2019, 07:55:18 AM »
Hello,

Just dropped off my engine for rebuild last week, and am looking at what to do with the carb. I have a non-original quadrajet that was on it, and I'm trying to decide if I should go to the expense of rebuilding this one, or just going with a JET (or other) carb that's already done. I don't see any value in keeping the one that I have since it's not original and will probably cost the same to rebuild(?) as just buying one off the shelf.

Anyone have any advise or input? If I do get a new one, any help on configuration or models? Any help is most appreciated!

Thanks,
Marc

First thing I'd do is research the numbers to see what the carb is and what it was originally installed on. Back in the day someone may have taken the carb off a different car that was in a junkyard or something which is now worth something to people rebuilding one of those cars.

Finding out what you have is a great start. IIRC the RAIII Firebirds had different carbs than GTOs because they had to make less power, so the secondaries were restricted from fully opening. The Carb might have been replaced with a newer 800cfm one just to get all the power.

Did you drive it? Do you have any idea how it was running as-is?  If it ran well I would be more inclined to keep it.

You can have it or another rebuilt to suit your engine and specs, or buy an unknown one rebuilt and setup to someone elses specs.

I agree that it would be best to check the numbers to see what you have. Who knows, it MIGHT be a rare carb worth selling. OR, it could be basically a piece of junk.

Here's a couple of Q-jet builders that get good reviews. The 1st one is in Texas, the other in CA.

Best as I can tell, the one I have is not rare. It's stamped with a service parts casting number - 17054905. Not an in demand part. FIL (original owner) thinks he might have the original carb in a box in the attic. I'm crossing my fingers. He's going to check when he gets home from an extended trip.

The car supposedly ran well, when it ran. It was parked in 1992 and has not run since. I'm doing a rotisserie mostly-resto on it, there's thread on here somewhere that is documenting that process.

I've emailed Quadrajet power with the engine specs (being build by Rick Johnson/Custom Auto in Crete, IL) and they're looking to see what they have that they can use to build a carb for me.
