Painting grilles With gold paint.
« on: June 07, 2019, 06:14:22 PM »
Looking for some advice when painting my grilles with gold paint. Since the grilles are plastic would you sand the area , just wipe it down with reducer, prime first, all the above? Just want to be sure that it adheres well. My history painting plastic has had mixed results. Thanks

Im assuming you know how to tape off the chrome good. I sanded mine, I think I started with maybe 320, then hit it with 400. I use a prep-sol type cleaner before I paint anything. I will wipe things down with a white cloth until its no longer showing any dirt. I then painted mine with a rustoleum product, which was the closest gold I could find. I did not do anything else. Several years later they are holding up fine. Cant post pics with this computer but I can get some up tomorrow.

It depends on the previous condition, in regards to how much you need to scuff up or remove for adhesion. A tired original with 3-coats of paint will be different to a new repro. Always dust on the first coat and look for oil spots, they can be addressed before layers are built up and need sanding back to redo.
